College Dorms/Public Showers: Do you shower with flip-flops?

When I was about to move into a dorm for a first time, everyone I knew made a huge deal over having "shower shoes." I was told I absolutely HAD to have a pair of flip-flops in to the shower because the floor was gross and I might catch athlete's foot, etc, etc, etc. I interpreted this to mean: "Wear flip-flops into the bathroom, take them off, get in shower. Get out, put flip-flops back on, walk to room." However, a friend recently found out that I don't wear flip-flops WHILE I shower and was completely appalled, telling me that everyone in a dorm wears flip-flops in the shower. Is this true? To make this poll fair for those who haven't lived in a dorm, I listed some options for public bathrooms too--such as community center/pool bathrooms, water park bathrooms, etc. Anywhere there's a public shower.

P.S. Obviously, this largely applies to public/shared bathrooms.

When I did live in a dorm, I had a specific pair of flip flops I always wore in the shower. Girls are just as nasty as boys and our showers were only scrubbed down twice a week. You wouldn't believe what goes on in public/dorm showers. Gross.

It might be gross of me, but I had just never thought about it until a few weeks ago, when my friend brought it up. Although I realize the showers probably can be a little icky, it IS a shower and our bathroom is electronically locked so that only a few people can access it (usually 6, but 5 in ours). It's all women, there are two stalls and two showers and I don't worry about it too much, haha.

Twice a week is generous! They clean our bathrooms like once a month. I honestly think I'm the only person that uses the shower stall I like though--I think everyone else uses the other one for whatever reason.

It sounds like you have a smaller dorm than I did. Our shower served around 40 girls and there were 3 stalls. And the showers weren't just used for showering so I always wore shoes. If your dorm is smaller and cleaner, I could understand not wearing shoes

Well, I don't have dorm experience but if I'm staying at a hostel for example, I always wear flip flops to shower. That's the whole point so you don't catch anyone else foot fungus.

WEIRD. This is the first time I have ever heard of wearing shoes in the shower. I just asked my boyfriend and he said everyone wore shoes in the shower. all news to me.

I've been lucky enough to avoid dorms, but I always wear flip flops in the gym or pool showers. I got athletes foot once when I was in middle school while taking a swim class, and that did it for me. No thanks--not again!

flip flops always....we were the only female bathroom for our dorm you should have seen the skanks going in and out of my shower...you'd find need for a has-mat suit

I'm too paranoid not to wear flip-flops in public showers. I've heard horror stories about people getting fungus and stuff from not wearing them.

When I was in school, I wore sandals to/in the bathroom, but not in the shower. I seem to have avoided contracting any infections, and haven't used shared bathing facilities since.

I got lucky in college we shared a bathroom with another room. Otherwise, hall style yes wear the shoes!!!! You can get a fungus!

Haha, that's how I felt! I used to wear flip-flops into the bathroom, but never in the shower because I hate flip-flops to begin with and wearing them wet might as well be a screaming death trap for a clutz like me. I always assumed everyone felt the same!

My roommate asked me about shower shoes the other day and was appalled that I didn't wear them in the shower and told me that everyone did, too!

@indiechick - Haha, I could see how it could get pretty bad. We have a smaller bathroom so I don't think we need any hazmat suits!

Being a Manicurist, I have seen some nasty feet from gyms and showers. I always wear flip flops on public floors.
