They are mildly painful for me. Nothing to cry over. But I have friends who get HUGE ones that put them in so much pain that they can't drink or chew too much. It's sad

Mine hurt about as much as a cracked lip would. So if I eat something hot and it touches the spot, it burns. Or if I try and peel the dry skin off or pick at it like I am always tempted to do. I do this because in the first few days it seems like dry skin... Feels exactly the same. I never know it's a cold sore until about a week. They have a distinct feel to them.

I have never been plagued by cold sores but my poor sister has had her lips disfigured by the blasted things. Studies show that most people get the Herpes simplex from a relative when they are kissed as babies and my sister was one of those types. I get a bit of tingling in the corners of my mouth if I am really sick and I might get a very small eruption but it heals very quick and doesn't need to be medicated. I haven't had an outbreak for well over 20 years or so....touch wood!

Yes it is true you should never perform oral sex when you are shedding or otherwise infectious or allow someone with a cold sore to perform oral sex on you because there is a risk you could spread the oral version to the genitals though the jury seems to be out on how frequently this actually happens.

I get them a lot. I used to spend a ton of money on special medicine, but I've found that Carmex chap-stick works like magic and it's really cheap!

I only had a proper cold sore once in my life, a few month ago. It felt quite nasty. I knew I had herpes virus in me, because sometimes I get some redness and tingling on my lip, but it usually goes away in a few hours. As long as your immune system is strong your body can resist the virus. So if you get them often it means your immune system is weak.
