Cats licking weird things...

Contributor: Zombirella Zombirella
This is probably an odd question but what the heck.

Does anyone else's cats lick weird things?

I have 2 cats but the one is...special. I have found her licking the wall, licking the shower curtain in the bathroom we don't shower in and use to hang clothes to dry and keep the cat food out of reach of the dog (when we had one) so it's DRY, there was an empty toilet paper tube on the rack and while I was in there on more than one occasion she was licking it and left a wet spot (no one seems to know how to change the roll here!). I recently had surgery on the arch of my foot and have to wear this plastic casting boot and she was licking the bottom of it yesterday! I had to shoo her away. I don't get her lol.

I'm no expert and I'm sure Kindred can weigh in on this one better than I can, but she might be looking for salt or another nutrient she isn't getting.

Or it could just be her special kitty personality.

I once had a cat that liked to chew on cotton balls. I had to keep a very close eye on her when I was doing my nails.

You have to be careful around my cat if you have a wound because she will lick the bandaid or even try to pull it off. I don't know if she thinks it smells tasty or she thinks she's trying to help but I like to pretend it's the latter.

She also licks the floor when she's grooming herself. LOL cats.

My cat likes to lick the bathroom floor around the toilet and eats wood chips from around the wood burning stove. So strange!

My dog does that kind of thing... She will lick a pillow or the couch or whatever is near her. I was told that it was for comfort.

I also once knew a cat who would hang out in my friends bathroom sink and lick the faucet..

Lol... animals do the weirdest things.

Are they marking these things as their own? I think cats do that.

I have dogs. (Cat allergy. Ug.) They lick "owies", and the Malamute licks our knees and feet, and the black Lab marks things with her face like a cat. She waits until "Alpha Man" leaves the room.... then sneaks over to his boots to mark them.... every evening. She's a weird dog. Years ago, we had an other rescue Lab and she would lick my middle daughter's pillow so much, the first few times, I thought she had peed on it. Sweaty little kid head leavins' must taste good.

One of the funniest and "stupidest" things I have ever seen; (and had to then clean up) Our dogs are not allowed upstairs, they do naughty things upstairs. So, one day, I'm sitting in our bedroom and I hear this... water running... sound. I'm sitting there thinking, "..the fuck?" I went into the upstairs bathroom... and my... special.... 89 lb Malamute is.... drinking from the toilet and pissing on the floor at the same time! *Gulp gulp gulp gulp....pssshhhhhhh... gulp gulp gulp gulp....pssshhhhhht... ." WHAT would persuade someone to do something like that? I was so angry, because I had mess to clean up, but it was SO funny at the same time.

Cats do seem to do weird things. We had 2 in the past but returned them to their rightful owner when we got our dog. But one of them flat out hated water but he would always sleep in either the shower or the sink.

Hahaha! I have three cats but they don't lick weird things lol They lick my clothes sometimes but I always realize that it's when I've wiped my hands after eating chips or something on my clothes and that's what they're enjoying.

To hell with Brita!

My cats are just weird. Fidget doesn't really lick weird things, but he does claw/paw on glass doors like he's trying to dig out. Dip licks shower curtains/shower doors.

One of my cats used to lick whatever magazine I had out (this was when I was a pre-teen, so it was those silly tween mags we had in the late 80's) and make a hole in a page or two.

She also liked to drink coffee. O_o

My Voldemort (Malti-poo) used to stick his head inside my ex-husband's shoes and lick and snarfle inside. Never my shoes (whew), but always the ex's. Hasn't done it to anyone's since the separation and divorce at least.

My siamese (Daxx) likes to like plastic bags and faucets, and the manx (Pooper) likes to steal the twisty-ties from bread bags and hoard them.

I had a cat a few years ago that likes to grab peoples asses and smile at them afterwards.

My cats do this actually! They lick the bag the toilet paper comes in, other plastic bags, shower walls, shower curtains, the floor, and the basement floor. My cats are all strange.

One of our cats licks the concrete floor in the basement, too! The other licks the carpet and the air when you scratch her back.

Lol haha! I'm glad you shared this. It made me smile.

I have 3 cats. Fuzz is a huge, red cat and she is hilarious! She's REALLY chubby I love that about her. Anyways, she licks my mascara! I don't know what it is, but when she's in my face and notices the smell, I guess, she tries to lick it right off my eye lashes.

The really weird thing she licks is peppermint! It's like it makes her high. I mean she goes crazy, catnip has nothing on peppermint. Strange because my other cats are not afffected by it. We first discovered her peppermint abuse when I would brush my teeth, she'd follow me, climb on the sink and swat the toothbrush with her hand while I was brushing! I caught her in the floor several times curled up with my toothbrush between her paws and had it to her mouth. Ha Ha. She'd roll around in the floor like that! It was like a druggie sniffing the last of their stash. Hee Hee.

Once we had that SNUS stuff by camel. It's like mint tobacco pounches and she got on the counter and took one and went crazy with it. We had to hide them from her.

Also, when my twin sister is over or my aunt, they always leave their purse in the floor and Fuzz can smell mint gum and will actually attack or climb inside the purse! It's hilarious. Last weekend she wrestled with my sister's purse in the floor for hours. She will actually eat the mint toothpaste, gum or whatever as long as it's mint!

Oh how neat! My Fuzz does something like that. When we scratch her back, she licks our face or anything that's in front of her! It is so funny. I thought she was the only weird0 cat that done that. Wonder what it is about the back scratching? She'll get overwhelmed and nibble sometimes. She's done it to my lip before. My partner will scratch her back and make her lick his forehead. It kinda hurts because the prickly tongue. Hee. Hee. I call it exfoliation by Fuzz

Wow! My cat does that... lick the shower curtain. I have no idea why. He's just weird. He licks walls, the floor and carpets, cardboard... he's just... weird. Heh. I used to think he had Pica because he also loves eating toilet paper and other nonfood items (though he's really picky about the actual food he eats. He's the only cat I've had that doesn't really care for people food.) He also loves licking the arms and hands of people who work in powdered metal factories (my mother and cousin). Plus he has a foot fetish.

He also loves stealing things... emery boards are his favorite! Plus toothbrushes, pens, plastic silverware. He plays fetch with these things... and is much better at it than any dog I've ever known.

Cats are just weird.

Not all cats do it. I've no idea why some do and others don't. And if you don't scratch just right, she flips out. She'll snap at you, growl, and hiss. Then she prances around, rubbing against your legs, looks at you like, "Why'd you stop?" and sits down for you to try again. I guess it must be tough living with humans.

One of my cats licks window panes on occasion. Trying to taste the great outdoors through the window? He also licks his empty food bowl. Incredibly pathetic.

Lol it's funny hearing what other cats do.
The cat that my fiance and I adopted that lives with him acts weird with back scratching. It's only when you get down her back right near her tail, she goes nuts and licks the air, you, herself and will meow. Sometimes she will bite. I don't know if it 'excites' her, is just too stimulating or she just doesn't like it? It's funny but my fiance teases her and does it all the time and I smack his hand.

My other cat that doesn't lick things does act all nuts whenever someone has something with menthol on, like a muscle rub. She will walk up and smell you or the container then back off shaking her head and squinting her eyes like it bothers her but she will come back for more! She will do the same thing and even drool. I had lotion on that had menthol in it and she bit me!

The one that licks stuff doesn't respond to catnip or cat grass but the other two go crazy and it's so funny. One of them will slobber all over her toy and rub her face all over it.
This one also won't eat people food, only her hard cat food, no soft and no cat treats. She will drink milk and eat cheese but nothing else.

my dog that I had that passed away learned what the word 'treat' meant and my other cat learned from observing him that when we said treat, he got something good. After he passed away one day I asked her if she wanted a treat and she started meowing and went to the kitchen! Lol, we had no clue she knew that word. Now if you say it she will wake out of a dead sleep and carry on until she gets her treat. She will follow you around begging for them.

Also, the window and empty-food-bowl licker treats my husband's shoes and gym bag like they're catnip, rubbing his face all over them. Trying to absorb testosterone? My shoes hold little appeal for him.

My cat liked to lick VapoRub. If you had it on any part of your body, she would seek you out and lick it all off. She would be salivating before she even got to you. It was hilarious.

This is the best discussion, Zombirella! I found it when I was searching for what I wanted to discuss, (unusual food cats eat). I'm still reading all the responses, but wanted to reply so people answering my discussion will see this one, too & maybe it will get more answers.

@P'Gell, I am still laughing my ass off about the dog in the bathroom! I understand the angry, but laughing at the same time, thing!

for everyone who noticed cats licking plastic items such as shower curtains & bags, or even photos & magazines...they are attracted to the chemicals used in making the plastic & it is unhealthy to allow them to do this, but just try stopping them, right? I noticed my girls try to eat a bit off a plastic grocery bag or other thin plastic, when they are trying to cast up a hair ball, apparently it helps them like syrup of ipecac!

I do have a strange little girl cat who licks everything that is fabric if it's near her when she's settled down. She is a hyper groomer & tries to groom all the other cats, too, as well as me! Then she will start licking the sheets or blanket on the bed, for up to an hour. The vet doesn't know what to do with her, other than make sure she's not ingesting anything dangerous, which is why no fleece blankets are on my bed. I just think she is soothing herself like a dog does when they lick repeatedly.

I have three cats and one of them is prone to licking photographs if I leave them out on the table. He also tries to eat everything including fuzzballs, my hair, q-tips, little bits of trash and plastic.

Most cats I've ever known have a special kind of love for things made out of cellophane-y type plastic or trash bag type material.
