Carnivore? Vegetarian? Vegan? Other?

I eat meat, both from enjoyment and from medical necessity. I have a rare genetic quirk that keeps members of my family from producing cholesterol naturally, so we all have abnormally low cholesterol. My grandfather died of heart failure brought on by the abnormally low cholesterol, and it seems to play in to the depression and anxiety that I and my siblings experience. My father is the healthiest and by far the least neurotic of any of us, though his diet is the most "unhealthy" (A doctor commenting on his absolutely perfect heart health and blood workup assumed he was a raw food vegan, and was instead told that my father's primary diet is red meat and potatoes).

It helps that I grew up in the country and have always been pretty close to my food. Factory farming is not so huge a thing out where I live, and a lot of the meat comes from small farms and Mennonites.

I definitely eat meat! Of course, it gets a little expensive and takes time to cook so I don't cook it that often, but I definitely eat meat when I get the chance!

You say you're concerned about the welfare of animals. Why not look into locally raised meat from small farms? This kind of meat is generally processed humanely, at MUCH smaller facilities than the big USDA plants. I know that some people believe eating meat is wrong, period, but if you are mostly concerned about the animals' quality of life and painless slaughter, this is an option.

P.S. I don't believe red meat is unhealthy. Even if you subscribe to the lipid hypothesis (i.e. that saturated fat and cholesterol causes heat disease), grass fed animals have much lower saturated fat than factory farmed animals. That is because they eat their natural diet-grass-instead of being fattened up on corn. I actually like the taste of grass fed meat a lot better-it tastes like beef, instead of a pile of grease.

I swing. I really do. I've spent many years of my life vegetarian and may years of my life as an omnivore. I'm quite fascinated with the ethics behind eating meat. I just started reading the River Cottage Meat Book actually.

That said, I'm a little grossed out by the thought of eating meat at this point in my life. I'm definitely into shellfish. Shellfish is pretty much why I'm an omnivore at this very moment. I love them. LOVE. I'm pretty OK with eating poultry, but again do care about the source and ethics of it.

I give myself permission to change, basically. Also my diet changes depending on where I am living or traveling. When I am on the west coast it is very easy for me to be vegetarian and eat well and socially. When I am in New York it is a different matter and I'm traveling to Eastern Europe this summer so we'll see what happens there.

I started taking an iron supplement a few years ago and it has helped tons. I was just feeling really exhausted and that completely changed when I started taking the iron.

I can relate with how socializing changes how you choose to eat.

Word up on not labeling yourself. It sounds like you and I have pretty similar eating habits and I'm also not into saying I'm exactly one thing or the other.

I'm vegan, partially by choice, partially not. I'm allergic to dairy (not just lactose intolerance) and meat has always made me sick. I ate poultry growing up, but it slowly began to bother my stomach enough that I stopped eating it during high school. I transitioned to vegetarian first before going fully vegan.

I've always ate some meat and always will. I really don't eat that much though. I will eat cheeseburgers and a little chicken, but I'm not a huge meat eater at all. I do love cheeseburgers though!

I'm an omnivore. Unless directed to be so by a medical authority, I will never be solely a carnivore or herbivore.

Raised an omnivore, one of the rare kids who loved veggies. Always had a weird little aversion to meat, but not enough to keep from eating it (I think the real aversion is the chunks of fat and gristle that comes with it - I see people eat that, and I don't understand how they can).

Two of my friends are total vegan, and I'll likely move in with them once I finish school and get work. I totally don't mind going completely vegan, I'll likely end up feeling better. I'm really looking forward to doing my own shopping instead of shopping for my family who are picky eaters who think macaroni cheese and hot dogs are exotic. *facepalm*

Thank you for the info. Sadly, I can't take supplemental iron, it makes me very ill. I took it a few times during one of my pregnancies and I was as sick as a dog, and the few other times I've tried at least 4 different types of iron supps, I get very ill. I have to get my iron from food.

Thanks for understanding how it can make socializing difficult. When we have a party we have the "meat free" entree, the "dairy free" entree, etc. I have a couple of friends who say they are gluten intolerant (although none of them have had an intestinal biopsy, and that's really the only way to tell) and now I have to be careful of stuff like.... crackers and bread around their children. (Because they scream and cry for it when they see it, they want it so badly.) *sigh* I've been to parties where all I've been able to eat is crackers, all the food was cheesy or full of shellfish. It's not my choice to not eat these foods, though, it keeps me alive not to eat them.

I tried to do the Vegetarian thing a long time ago, but it did not last to long. I think I did it for a month and that was eat. Something that I had been dying to eat got the best of me one day and that was a wrap.

Loved reading everyone's answers! I am now about 2 weeks or so into my vegetarian diet and I have to say I feel better than I have in a long time. However, I always ate whatever I wanted and didn't really stop myself from eating anything unhealthy. So I think deciding to go Veg has made me take a better look at all of the food I am eating. I do miss meat a little bit, but so far I am enjoying the "fake meat" products that you can buy.

I went veg. for a while, but didn't have the will-power or the iron-count to keep it up. I do try to stick mostly to fish and game-animals (killed by my oddly numerous buddies-that-hunt) or at the very least humanely raised meat.

I was a vegetarian for a year right after I graduated high school, but found myself getting increasingly fatigued, depressed and moody, so I started eating meat again. It has been seven years since I started eating meat again and up until the new year, I ate a lot of meat. Starting at the beginning of the year I have tried to have a healthier relationship with food and because of that I have cut back on the amount of meat, dairy and processed products that I eat, sticking mostly to fruits and vegetables. I used to eat meat at every meal and I now have made it a point to only eat meat (with the exception of eggs) for only one of my three meals a day, replacing meat in the other two meals with eggs, beans, nuts and seeds. I have also made it a point to cook at least one dinner a week vegetarian for the household. I have found this to be a nice compromise. As much as I would love to be completely vegetarian, I just don't see it as an option because of how my body and mind reacted to it before.
