Body Piercing

Body piercing carries risks and can sometimes, still today, carry a stigma with them that people don't expect.

Do you have piercings? If so, where? What prompted you to get them?

Have you had any adverse reactions (i.e. infections or complication) or do you have horror stories about how people have responded to your piercings?

I have a nose stud and it's pretty small. But it made my grandma so mad at me, she cried and said I looked cheap.

Thanks grandma, I love you to.

Oh and for those who don't have piercings, is there a specific reason that you choose not to or is it just not your thing?

I used to have multiple piercings; ears, labret, tongue, nipples, inner and outer labia.

Today I'm down to the labret and my ears. I can still put jewelry in my inner labia piercings but rarely do. The rest I let heal up cuz they got to be a pain in the ass and gave me more discomfort than pleasure.

The weird thing is most folks don't say a damned thing about the labret, which is my most obvious piercing. Like it's not really there.

Maybe it's not. Maybe it's a figment of my imagination...

I always wanted some piercings. The only one I have ever had was a tongue piercing that my wife and I got together. I had to take mine out due to some oral surgery and by the time I could open my mouth wide enough to put it back in it was healed up. I always liked the look of a labret piercing, as well as eyebrow piercings. I also wanted a few ear piercings as well.

Currently I have no piercings, mainly due to my position at work. I'm in the public eye a lot and it affects my company's reputation. I have known others in my position that have tattoos, but those are easier to hide than facial piercings.

I will say that in the workplace, there is still a stigma about piercings, moreso than tattoos. I'm involved in the hiring process and I see this kind of thing all the time. As part of that process, I make sure we adhere to the guidelines and judge a person strictly on their work history, references, and the general feel of their competency during the interview. Still, this kind of behavior goes on in the every day workplace.

Piercings did not become popular until I was too old to care. My wife and I have discussed the possibility of nipple, clitoral hood (HCH or VCH) or labial (inner or outer) for her. However, you indicate that they are more trouble than they are worth.

Could you explain a bit more?

I've had both nips done (righty twice) and my bully button twice.

I would recommend piercing to tattoos for people new to body mod's. They're temporary and easier to hide.

I eventually took them out though. People assumed I liked having my nipples played with just because they were pierced...I don't really. Plus, they were new in the spring/summer and the sweat didn't help out the healing that well.

What about branding though? Anyone done that? Anyone do that and NOT crave pork rinds or anything like that afterward?

For me, the outer labia piercings made shaving very difficult. The inner ones I have I like but they're like an ear piercing, once they heal you can take them out and go months, even years without jewelry in. For me, it's more comfortable on a daily basis to not wear it, though I will occasionally stick it in for decoration.

My nipple piercings were very problematic for me in that they made my nipples so sensitive they couldn't be touched. And I found i liked mouth and tongue on nipple itself far better than mouth and tongue on metal trying to get at nipple. heh.

I've got numerous ear piercings, almost 20 I think. Eyebrow, nostril, septum, tongue, lip, both nipples, and two in my belly button.

I got my nipples pierced with the hopes that all the hype I had heard about them getting more sensitive was true. Didn't seem to be for me, but they don't bother me except when the crusties build up, because I have no idea why healed piercings keep crusting occasionally, but I've been told it's a fairly common thing with the nipples.

As far as the rest of my visible piercings go I've actually been surprised at some of the reactions I've gotten. I have of course had to deal with the occasional ass who thinks it's funny to ask how I can kiss with my lip ring in, or eat with my tongue ring in, but I don't care about them anyway. What I love is the older people who ask questions because they're genuinely curious. And I've gotten a bunch of those. I never get tired of answering the questions, just of being asked if I'm tired of answering the questions because honestly, if I wasn't ok with answering, I wouldn't choose to present myself this way.

I just have a little stud in my nose. And honestly, no one hardly says anything about it. I am a teacher, so kids ask why I have a nail in my nose, but that's really it. I get the occasional "oh that's so cute! I wish I could do that!" and even my grandma thought it was cute.

I know it might sound pretty weird. but when I was in middle school, I had my ears pierced and they were constantly infected so I let them closed. I have since gotten an industrial which has went much better

I have an ear piercing, but it's fairly closed now. It constantly got infected and disgusting, because I cannot wear anything other than gold. Well, for horror stories, this is rather disgusting, but it once started to itch so much after scabbing over that I scratched an entire piece off. I was absolutely mortified, I was fairly young at the time. Thankfully, it healed well.

Why do I not have more? Because it would look unprofessional on me. And, the one place that I would love to get pierced is an impossible place.

Ah, yes, I got the earring because I thought that it would "look cool." I was like, what, eleven or something? HAHA! No reason really, in other words.

All I have is the basic one-in-each-earlobe. I got them because I find them attractive, but I have no desire to get any more piercings, no matter how pretty they look. *shrug* It's just me, I appreciate them on others, but I don't want them. No horror stories, very few infections. Sorry, I'm boring here!

I have my ears, tongue, and nipples pierced.

My ears hurt the most (I have two in each ear and a cartilage piercing as a third and fourth in one). The basic piercing was the worst.

I have had my tongue done twice because I got sick and had to remove it the first time for medical procedures. The tongue was the easiest.

My nipple piercings were because J just decided one day I needed them, and since I love piercings I went for it. They didn't hurt, but that is subjective to each person. They take forever to heal though, and I am growing antsy about that.

I did have my bellybutton done, but when I joined the military I took it out and now I have a huge fucking scar and I regret ever doing that one.

I only have my ears pierced. 5 on the left, and 1 on the right, and 4 of them I did myself. I did it years ago when I was into punk. My Mom had an absolute cow about my ear.

I've contemplated getting my nose done, but I don't do pain well, and I don't think I could handle getting nipples, belly button, labia, or clit hood done.

I have a double piercing in my ears...my Mom was so angry she wouldn't look at me for a few days. I haven't chosen to have other body parts pierced because I am allergic to pain...
My body tends to heal very slowly and it always seemed to big a risk for me especially since my body eats base metals so i'd have to have very expensive jewelry. Earrings are expensive enough when you MUST have pure gold, sterling silver or platinum or risk infection. Can't even wear surgical steel it corrodes, my body is like acid or something. LOL

Oh heck ya...I was always forced to take out one set of earrings when I was waitressing. They claimed it was a safety issue that one set would magically fall into the food, the real issue was most of the older patrons considered multiple earrings to be "fast and loose". No other facial adornment was allowed as well. This was another reason I didn't get any other piercings, withthe hinky way I heal it would have been a mess to try to remove the stud every day.

I have / have had a bunch of piercings (nipples, nostrils, septum, bridge, eyebrows, tragus, lobes, conch, cheeks, labret, navel, micro dermal anchors on my collar bone, nape of my neck, hmmm where else..)- half of which I did myself, some that I have since stretched and others that I have left empty for years, plus one branding, and I've done well over 300 piercings - man, I could tell some horror stories. But I could also tell some amazing stories of people who were super easy to pierce and healed really quickly. It goes both ways.

Before getting genital piercings just be sure you know the risks and are fully ready for the aftercare. I do not recommend piercings or tattoos as an impulse purchase. It should be something you consider carefully.

I still want more micro dermal anchors...but we'll see. I love the really small ones. For now, I wear a large pieces in my ears (00g) from time to time - but usually opt for 'normal' earrings for daily wear, a segment (looks seamless) ring in my septum on occasion, a nose stud in my nostril daily, and my tragus rings which haven't been out in 10+ years.

I completely forgot that I had my belly button pierced also. It healed wrong and was constantly being irritated by my pants and shirts and getting infected, so I took it out. It didn't hurt at all to get done - at least it didn't hurt ME. I wish it had gone better, but I won't do it again.

I used to have a vertical industrial piercing in my ear and then got both nipples pierced vertically and wore barbells (I have a thing for vertical piercings). My mom accidentally saw my nipple piercings once and cried about it. I felt bad for her but since I had to take them out I've always wanted them back in :o(

What prompted me to get my nipples pierced: I've always hated the way my nipples looked so I thought I should celebrate them and make them prettier by putting in some jewelry! I loved it and so did everyone else who saw them. Gave me more confidence! I took them out because they just never healed.

By the way, node studs where I live (in Israel) are so incredibly common, girls get them when they're like 14-16ish. They're really trendy here! When my cousin got one (she was 15 or 16 at the time) my mom turned around and asked ME if I wanted one!

I have three in my left ear, four in my right, my belly button and my tongue, which is an 8g.

I got my first piercings at about 6 (ears, of course) then the rest of my ears at 15 or so, tongue at 19 or 20, belly button at 20. No horror stories, everything healed flawlessly, my tongue didn't swell but a miniscule amount, I've had it pierced and stretched so long that I can leave a barbell out for about a week before it becomes a bit of a tight fit.

As far as to why did I get them... I think they're attractive. I've caught a little flak for the tongue and belly bar but that's because I had them before they were commonplace. Now no one says anything, even at my office, which is quite conservative in most aspects.

I have my eyebrow, rook, both lobes, cartilage in my right ear, and an orbital.

Piercing your nipples has a higher chance of DESENSITIZING them, so that's why I didn't do that since mine are so wonderfully sensitive, I wouldn't want to do anything stupid to lose it .

Mine to. Only Gold or Platinum. I only have my ears pierced, because my mother got them done when I was 3 months old at the doctors. I may add a few to my ears but I really can't handle blood/pain at all. I faint. That's a problem.

I have thirteen (used to be fifteen) piercings. And one tattoo, on my ribs.
- Four earlobe (Gauged)
- Two cartilage
- Industrial
- Conch
- Trachea
- Two lip (Removed)
- Both nipples
- Bellybutton

I love all of my piercings, and they have all been done professionally by the same (unbelievably attractive) piercer. Many people don't realize that I have them, because my hair usually down, but when they do finally notice I get such mixed reactions. Some people want to ask a lot of questions about when I got them, why, did it hurt, etc. Others are creeped out and disgusted by them. You can't please everyone, I guess! My mother signed for almost all of my piercings, as I got most of them when I was under the age of 18, so she obviously doesn't mind them, but my father is far more conservative and still doesn't approve. The rest of my family just thinks I'm weird.

My newest ones are my nipples, and those were done for my 18th birthday. It's been a few years, but they still throw a tantrum now and then. I got them because I was born prematurely and I had an inverted nipple that I was always very self-conscious about, so I read that a lot of people either get surgery or have piercings performed. I wasn't concerned about losing sensitivity in that area because that's not a very erogenous zone for me, but I found that after the piercings I've become far more sensitive.

My most painful piercing was definitely my industrial. The top part of my ear that was pierced was quite sore and irritated for several months before it calmed down, but it has healed perfectly fine. All of my piercings have had a pretty smooth healing process with the exception of my bellybutton that I didn't care for properly (I was 14, it was a secret, etc, etc).

I don't mind people having a lot of piercings, and I would let my children get them, but I wouldn't want them doing anything that would permanently affect their body in a morbid way. For example, I wouldn't want them gauging out their nose or labret piercing to a 0, and I would definitely sign for a piercing over a tattoo.

I worry about having to take them out for certain jobs. And I have definitely been turned down more than once because of my piercings. People should keep this in mind before they do any body mods. Yes, people today are getting more liberal and open to things like this, but there are safety codes and guidelines that companies must meet.

Oh, and if anyone has any questions about piercings, feel free to ask.

I'm seriously considering micro dermal anchors but I'm not sure where to put them yet? Since I have a fairly conservative day job, all my piercings and tattoos have to be easily covered.

I have two in each ear, a closed (and scarred - yuck) belly button piercing, a tongue ring (that I have to wear clear acrylic in during the weekdays, and my absolute favorite, my sternum piercing. I used to have one. It lasted me just over a year. I think its failure was due mostly to placement and the fact that my skin there was really thin. But I wanted it down low and the piercer and I had to come up with a compromise on how far down it actually went, lol
