How do you feel about birthdays?

Contributor: Cat E. Cat E.
I dread when my birthday comes. I remember being depressed on my eighteenth birthday ( in the 90s) because I just couldn't believe I was of legal age. I never mention it to anyone.

How do you feel about them and do you make a big deal out of it?

All my birthdays from my 17th to my 21st were horrible (people dying, fighting deadly diseases, terrible family news), so I haven't really celebrated my birthday since I was about 19. It was guarenteed that something awful would happen.

I celebrate every birthday, because the alternative to aging is death. I know, that's morbid, but it's true. You should celebrate that you've had another 365 days of life, of laughing, of seeing new things and meeting new people.

When I was younger I truly enjoyed my birthdays. My 30th was traumatic for me...it seemed like a milestone into old age. My 40th didn't bother me so much. Now that my 50th is coming up, I knew I would be very depressed so I decided to go on a cruise to alleviate the pain of being an old and single woman. This may very well be the best ever. Maybe something magical will happen to change my life. You never know who else might be on that cruise feeling the same way. Maybe I'll meet someone special. I'm hoping so anyway.

I hate having a big deal made out of it, but a nice dinner is always appreciated.
