Baked gifts

Contributor: Cherrylane Cherrylane
I got a new apartment today and it's a garage apartment located behind the house of a lovely young couple (husband seemed around 30) who just had their first baby. Since I love baking I was thinking it'd be nice to drop off some delicious baked something, but I'm horrible at making decisions and can't pick what I want to bake them!

For christmas I got what appears to be a quite promising book of "gourmet" cupcake recipes so I thought I might try one of those. But some of them get really taste specific, featuring certain fruits or nuts or liquors and I'd hate to give them something that had a flavor someone just doesn't like. For instance, one of the cupcakes I personally want to try most is for a Tarte Tatin cupcake, which is like a cupcake version of the French upside down apple tarte with caramelized apples, but I know for my mom, apples "just don't do anything" for her. But then again, an uber plain standard something isn't really my preference either.

Additionally, the book also has some random recipes at the back that are sort of like cupcakes, in size and shape, but not. Like a cupcake sized/individual sized deep dish apple pie, cherry almond pie, and strudel cups.

And then, I've also been dying to have an excuse to try out a few recipes from here, like this link which is for a dark chocolate salted caramel tart. Or there's a recipe for nutella swirl pound cake...

try whoopie pies. they're like inside out cupcakes. for cupcakes, i recommend red velvet (with real cream cheese icing) or german chocolate.

Adventures are great, food is no exception. The fact that the item is home made is awesome and is a gift in and of it's self. There is nothing wrong with going over there with some samples and letting them know you would like to gift them alot more if they like them. Plus asking them for their feedback will make them smile. I have never had bake good samples turned down even when I didn't know my neighbors and needed some guiniea pigs.
don't worry anymore it's also a great conversation starter so you can fidn out what they like and what they are intreasted in.

Can you afford the time and ingredients to make a variety? This might be the answer!! You cannot go wrong with a few items of different flavors.

Why not a mix? Some standard flavors and some unique ones. I like getting bread from people otherwise because you can always freeze it if there is too much and it can be eaten for breakfasts if you aren't too into sweets like cupcakes.

I agree with maybe half fancy and half normal! I personally would shy away from anything with nuts or coconut because of how common those allergies are!

I got cookie dough cupcakes for Christmas, I recommend something like that for anyone who wants to impress!

Hmmm I like the idea of a variety.

I suppose I could halve the recipes and then give them 2 of a few different kinds and pass off the left overs to my family and friends haha

That's a great idea. I have two kids and I know when they were babies and my mom came over with food of any kind it was greatly appreciated. You're doing a great thing there and they will appreciate it. Congrats on the new apartment.

Sounds like the way to go! I'm sure they will love the fact that you made them something, regardless of what it is

just a couple types of cupcakes, then throw in some batter breads (orange-cranberry is welcomed this time of year) and make chocolate chip oatmeal cookies to round it out. I go this route with my holiday gift-baking - there will always be something for somebody by having a little variety.

Congrats on your new place.

How nice of you! When our neighbors moved in a few years ago, I made them my peppermint bark. Every year now, it's our tradition. We trade baked things now! LOL. It actually turned out to be a fun thing. This time I made peanut butter balls (amazing!) almost everyone loves them. They're easy, quick, pretty cheap to make. They made us different little chocolates kind of like you see on Valentines day! It was so cute. They made white chocolate, different fudge too!

Still, cupcakes are a favorite! I absolutely love them and let me tell you, if I was your neighbors, you'd have yourself a BFF! Lol. Chocolate or strawberry is a great idea since most people like them. Oh, peanut butter cookies are a good one too.

I probably wouldn't go all out on it, but a tin of cupcakes or something like peanut butter balls is hard to resist! Whatever you make, I'm sure it'll be amazing and they'll appreciate it. I bet they won't forget you!

Thanks guys, so helpful!

I really want to do something nice for them. The husband has been extremely helpful and even volunteered to paint the rooms whatever colors I wanted before I move in.

I want a hot pink kitchen lol. I figure it's the least I can do to bake something fabulous for them in return haha

I personally hate cinnamon, but I can always appreciate a gift. If I don't end up eating something, I can always give it to my boyfriend. He will just about eat anything Nutella swirl pound cake sounds very delicious to me I think you should be adventurous and do what sounds good. I am sure they will find a way to enjoy it After all, it's the gift-giving spirit that matters the most.

Cupcakes, to me, say "birthday". I'd do some nice biscotti & some homemade hot chocolate powder. Both are easy-ish to make, and neither seem childish. Cupcakes, to me, seem childish.

My only suggestion on which flavor to make, is to make something a little different than regular vanilla or chocolate, but stay away from anything with nuts (just in case). Honestly the recipe you linked looks amazing, but not everyone likes dark chocolate.

Usually cupcakes are, but the recipes I have aren't childish at all. It's just in the convenient single serving size of a cupcake.

Hmmm. I still haven't decided haha. Moving in in a few days. We shall see what I can come up with

Cupcakes or cookies, as long as it's from the heart and it's the thought that counts.
