Bad Gifts

What is the worst gift you have ever received?

I consider myself an excellent gift giver. A lot of thought goes into most anything we get as a gift for another. For instance every Christmas my sister-in-law tells the story of how when she was young her brother kept her up all night singing the monchichi theme song only to discover she did not get one. So this year we bought her one. On the other hand the only thing my wife or I have received from them for the past 8 years comes straight from the Walmart Christmas aisle. I do not care about the price, it does not matter to me that they are cheap, but I do not even drink coffee, not even holiday flavored ones.

So my worst gift is anything I have received from my sister-in-law.

A wrestling sweatshirt. I wear a lot of black and my grandmother though "Heym this sweatshirt is black, so she'll love it!"

I -hate- wrestling.

I won't list anything specific, but I have two categories of gifts that are bad.

1) When I was growing up, my brother and I would always get the same thing, just in different colors. We both hated that. I know my parents were just trying to make sure they treated us equally, but they always took it too far. If you have kids, please avoid this trap. It may seem superficial, but it just isn't special to get the same things year after year.

2) When I look at something and say, "I want that", but when I get the gift it is only something marginally close to "that." If I point at a blue, down filled, parka length stadium coat, that's what I want. I don't want a blue wool jacket just because it happens to also be a blue coat. This is a lot like the "it's just as good as the one you wanted" argument. (I think BMW has a commercial like that) I'm not talking about being overly picky, just specific.

As an adult, I'm happy to get a gift of any kind. If someone thinks of me highly enough to buy or make something to give me, it means a lot to me. I don't care if it's even a gag gift. If they thought I was worth the trouble, it makes me feel good.

I got laundry detergent from my parents this year. My parents are atheists and don't really celebrate Christmas so I was happy to get anything lol

A gift card to a store that wasn't even in our state and that I wouldn't have been caught dead in, and that was before those new sites where you can exchange them for a card you can use.

A guitar strap with Van Gogh's Starry Night painting printed on it. I like the painting but... It was just too much!

My aunt got me a bubble bath set that made me break out in hives. Not her fault, but still, it was bad.
