Google recently announced the launch of their Chrome OS (operating system) pilot program. Details: link I applied to test it because I love all things Google and I'm incredibly curious. They send you an unmarked netbook that runs on Verizon's 3G network to test it out and give feedback if you're accepted into the program. Apps are run online rather than downloaded so you are "living on the web" so to speak. For example, rather than using Microsoft Office, OpenOffice, or whatever your preferred program may be, you utilize Google Docs. (I suppose you could use the other online services as well.)
Are you planning on checking out Chrome OS?

I would be curious to read people's feedback once they have used it, although I don't plan on cheating on my mac

I'll stick with Windows, thanks.

I love google as a search engine and I have an appreciation for Google Chrome browser but I'm not letting go of my Windows 7.

Would rather have my Windows 7 (soon to be 8) than the Google OS. Just not my thing. Mac vrs PC will always be the eternal debate. Chrome OS will probably just be another outlier like Linux.

Im going to apply - but mainly just for the freebie and that it will make me cooler than some of my geeky friends lol

Good luck. As far as I know they have already been sending them out. Only 60,000 for everyone who signed up. Hope I get lucky this time. Usually I don't

I really love Google. The search engine is wonderful. I don't use any email client since I tried GMail. I use Google Talk as a secondary IM. I regularly use Google Maps, Google Earth, Picasa, dictionaries, and so on, and so forth. It's funny, but I did not use Google Chrome because I've already found my favorite browser.
I think, Google really has a potential to make a breakthrough on operating systems' market. But I doubt that upcoming Chrome OS will become such breakthrough. Anyway, I'll try Chrome OS as soon as it will become possible for me.

Looks interesting. Don't know if I'm ready to try it out yet.

I cannot lie, not using my MacBook as much will make me a bit sad if I get picked. (I'll still be on it to play Sims 3 between semesters!)

What browser do you use? I've tried quite a few but Chrome is by far my favorite and the fastest out of them.

That's no fun that you can't try it. Hopefully you'll get a chance soon!

There was a poll and discussion about favorite browsers. You may want to take a look at it, it's here.
Edit: oh, I see you've already read that discussion.

I want to, kind of.

It seems interesting but I don't like that all your data is stored remotely (security comes to mind) and because it requires your google account.. Well, I have 2 and I have a hard enough time managing them in my browser. But in my OS? sounds like it would be a bitch. THe fact that your account is the basis for all Google services is kind of a thorn in my side.

Depends on how well you manage your computer. Google is staffed by full time professionals, and think about the number of viruses and trojan horses out there that allow people to do whatever they want with your computer.

Understandable. I've adapted to it somewhat since I have an Android phone and so much of that is entirely account-based. I imagine it would be a bit of a change though going to my OS though.

Security doesn't worry me too much since Google is very selective about their employees.

While that is true, I like having my stuff in my hands as it were. (Not literally, of course). Also, I DON'T like the idea of my everything be tied together. Privacy issues, I guess.

Also, I was considering security in terms of hackers (not employees). It seems like a very likely target.
Too many eggs in one basket for me.

Sounds great, I signed up earlier for this. I really hope I het one.

I got one just now to try!
I was so confused when there was a package outside my door, all that I am expecting right now is a t-shirt and this was too large and heavy for a shirt. Inside was an unmarked black netbook with Chrome OS!

I applied for the test, just because I'm kind of a geek and it would be another toy to screw around with at the coffee joint or wherever I happened to take it. I'm really not a huge fan of migrating away from my desktop PC, however, because it's a powerhouse that I built and tweaked from the ground up and portable computers just don't compare.
However, a ChromeOS netbook has definite and clearly defined role in the computing world. Plenty of people don't want the headaches associated with the traditional PC, the risk of malicious software, and maintenance that can be involved.
I think the Chrome netbook will be very popular among those who have a computer simply for browsing the web and do not wish to be involved in any sort of intense gaming or computing tasks.
Simplicity is bliss for many.

Nice to see Microsoft get more competition but I wouldn't bother testing it myself.

No - after using the Chrome Browser, I've decided that Google captures too much information and provides for inadequate privacy.
