I drove past a house today and there was so much stuff on the porch and in the yard and in the windows, there were loads of stuff....My first real life hoarders encounter....Do you hoard certain things? Toys, etc or other things? Do you have neighbors that do?

While I'm not a hoarder myself, I've run a few calls (I'm an EMT) to houses of people who do hoard. It was definitely an eye opening experience. Stacks of old newspapers and bags and bags of *stuff* everywhere, with little narrow pathways running through the house. I feel badly for people who have to live like that. It must be so hard.

My grandparents hoard but it's not ever anything gross like garbage. They're finally starting to go through everything and clean out their house though. Last year they had a pipe burst and their entire first floor flooded. It took forever to get everything out of the house to remodel the first floor.

I agree with you Geogeo. I hate clutter and panic when I see too much. I believe organized clutter is still clutter. I feel bad because I am always throwing away stuff but I just feel like if no one is using it then why keep it.

I am not a hoarder-but like collecting a few things. My mother in law--definitely a hoarder!! She gets 3-5 of every item, and sleeps in the living room because the rest of her house is too full of stuff, and a boxcar, and 3 outbuildings and....yeah, it is odd to actually know someone that does this.

My parents are semi-hoarders... I feel like one with all the lingerie I have.

My mother in law. While you walk into her house and see that it is nice and clean. Everything seems nice, but if you walk into the basement, you can see she hoards food and essentials. If she has a coupon, she buys it. Even if she doesn't use the item. It's terrible. If we are low on cash and need shampoo, laundry soap, dish soap, body wash, tooth paste, toothbrushes, or ice cream. We can get it out of her basement. We had to get a dumpster there not too long ago, but she had can goods that were from 2003 and it was 2011 when we did that. We found tons of old food. She can't stop either. She lives to cut out coupons.

Thank goodness nobody in my neighborhood likes to hoard stuff, people around here do not like to see junk in other people's yards. One of my neighbors had an old Jeep Cherokee with a large dent on its side, parked on his own driveway for a long time, and someone spray painted "Move me away" on the body, the owner finally had that eyesore towed away a few weeks later.

I'm not a hoarder, but I have a habit of stocking up on paper towel rolls, bathroom tissues, Kleenex, etc. whenever they're on sale; so I have two mountains of paper towel rolls and bathroom tissue rolls stacked up in my guest room...not a pretty sight.

My grandparents are. Both of them had parents who were. Because of that, my mom is determined to have the chain end. She does not want us living like that ever. They have little walkways to get from room to room, but that's it. I was staying over one time and needed a toothbrush. I found three unopened ones in the first box I checked, in the den. Not even in the bathroom.

The woman that I work for is a serious hoarder. She has enough stuff to furnish a 3 bedroom house stuffed into a small 1 bedroom studio apartment.

The manager at her apartment complex told her she has to get rid of stuff or find another place to live.

I collect things, but I'm not a full blown hoarder. I worked with someone who was apparently. The people who had been in her house said it was to the ceilings with crap. I couldn't live like that.

Definitely not a hoarder but the way things going I can picture myself in about 30 more years with dildos and vibrators taking up my living space!

I have a feeling my neighbor might be, but I don't know them personally. They have this storage pod that takes up their whole driveway (that I assume holds stuff it's been there over 6 months) and about a week ago I saw the garage door up and it was full from floor to ceiling so the have to park in the street. I haven't ever been in the house though, so maybe the rest of it is not bad.

My parents are.... my mom hates the way they live, but she simply doesn't know how to stop. She cant throw anything away, and buys more and more. I have tried so hard to help them, but to very little avail.

My mother was a hoarder - when she passed away it was very hard on my dad trying to get rid of all the stuff. I spent more than a week trying to help him get rid if as much as I could.

Our parents teach us a lot - both what to do and not to do, this lesson was surely what not to do.

I have that tendency (nothing gross like garbage, but mostly stuff I want to recycle, like plastic bags and shipping boxes.) It drives my husband absolutely nuts, but I can't stand the thought of anything sitting in the dump that could be reused or recycled.

Hey, it could be worse.

I do know hoarders and I know how heartbreaking it is for them as much as it is for those who love them. No one WANTS to live in filth or jammed into a house with so much stuff but the compulsion is just a mental mind fuck. I have tendencies toward hoarding and work very hard to control the desire to have more and more. It is a constant struggle but over the years it has become easier to limit myself and give away the excess. It used to be books and magazines, then it was decorator plates and knick-knacks. I will admit toys and lingerie are a bit of an obsession right now and I struggle to buy only what I want rather than the hundreds I could buy...I just have to keep telling myself that I only have one vagina and it doesn't need hundreds of toys!

I am from a family of addicts and I know I have the tendencies so I deal with them...being surrounded by things can make me feel safe and warm. Now a days I try to project these feelings on stuff that is worth having and surrounding myself with. It helps that both of my partners are sympathetic and don't push but refuse to allow me to keep broken items or things that don't get used. I have specific areas I am allowed to fill with things...if I can reorganize the area so more fits then great! If not then something has to go...of mine, not theirs.

No I don't hoard and I don't know anyone who does. I sometimes call my partner a hoarder but he's not really THAT bad.

One of my old boyfriends was borderline but it was with his clothing. I think that he had more than I do.
