Anyone wear the letters off their keyboard?

Contributor: Wicked Wahine Wicked Wahine
My laptop is only 2 yrs old & I have already worn off the "E, R,T, U, I, O, H, N, M". Since I hunt & peck, this is a problem! I have black keys with white letters. I've never had this happen before, but this is my first laptop & first tome with black keys, if that even matters.

So, this happen to anyone else? Any solutions that worked long term? I have some ideas, but would like to hear your's.

Yep...doesn't matter what type of keyboard. Normally it is the oils on your hands that do it.

No and it wouldn't matter if they did, I touch type, it's my profession, first many years on the old manual electric, then the old key-punch machines, today personal and business computers. So lets see, I started typing at age 16, I'll be 60 this year, I don't really need to look.

Oh and when I was in school they had you practice on typwriters without numbers, letters or characters on the keys.

It happens to me on every keyboard, ever. My newest laptop is the biggest problem, since the keyboard is backlit. The keys that are rubbed bare are now clear with a light shining into my eyes.

I have keys whose letters are fading, but so far none have completely rubbed off. Fortunately I can type without looking at the keyboard, so even if they do wear off completely, it's no biggie.

I barely have a "C" on my keyboard. I also have a worn spot on my spacebar from my right thumb.

I had that problem on my first computer, an IBM 486. I was glad I knew where all the keys were! My last 2 computers (laptops) have had keys with the letters "carved" into the keys, with white ink in the recessed spaces. I haven't had any letters wear off with those, but it has occurred to me that, if this did happen, I could dab some whiteout in there, wipe away the excess, and then I'd be in business again.

Long-term, I'd suggest getting a keyboard with the keys like mine for your next computer — maybe?

That has never happened to me, but my wife really wears all the letters off of hers - like hardcore. They are all gone.

Some of my keys have worn spots on them, but since the letters on them are off-set (the letters are high and to the left) the worn spots on the keys from typing don't touch the letters. I type without looking at the keyboard too - my parents forced me to take a typing class in highschool. I didn't want to, and hated the class... my mom just kept saying I'd be thankful one day... and I am. Darn them!

I can see how that would make typing difficult if you're a hunter/pecker.

Yes, and a dent in my space bar, and my mouse has a trail on it....This will be my third worn out computer keyboard.

I'm actually surprised, but I haven't worn any of the letters off my keyboard since I got my laptop a little over a year ago. There's a shiny spot on my spacebar and on the touch mouse, though. Even if the letters did wear off it wouldn't matter. I touch type.

I did have 2 keys break completely off when my dog decided to jump into my lap while I was typing once. I was able to get that fixed quickly and easily, so you can't even tell it happened now.

The E,S,I,O, and L are mostly worn off, but the others are fine. This is the first computer I've had an issue with and it's less than a year old.

I also broke off the E chiclet last night & can't get it back on! (I was cleaning cat hair out from under it!) I never had this problem with my desktop, but I needed a computer I could bring around the house with me, so this is what I got & I am stuck with it for a long time.

Oh, jennifur77, I hear you about the nails! Thank God I have really hard keys! Problem is, with no cover on the E, I have to use the one finger without a really long nail to tap the center, recessed, little silicone, nub thingy & that finger is on my right, not my left hand, so it really interrupts the flow.

I'm going to contact Dell & ask if they have any rub on transfers, now that I know it happens to many others! I never put lotion on before typing, but I do clean my computer a lot. Maybe it's my natural oils & all the time I'm typing now that I have all these new friends on EF!

Thanks for all the replies!

My computer is only 4 months old so it still has all of the letters for now. However, you can definitely see what keys I use the most since they're already fading. There's also a nice smooth spot on my spacebar from my right thumb. I guess I hit in the same spot every time.

I found a site where you can fix them yourself, they have stickers, overlay protectors, all sorts of cool stuff. In case anyone else is interested:

It's my observation that people who use a lot of hand lotion or eat finger foods while on the computer wear down the coating much quicker. I've never had the letters disappear but I have worn the shine off of keys.
