Try Freelancer. They take a chunk of your pay as a fee, but the jobs there are legit. Often people post "gigs" up there and will keep those who did a good job as regular freelance workers.

For example, I was hired to write a few articles. My employer liked my work, so I was allowed to request more outside the Freelancer system (no fees!) in order to keep working for him. I've been doing that for years now.
