Am I the only one?

My friends think its funny how ridiculously cheap I am sometimes. I had a laptop for a few years, the screen went out on it. Well, the stupid thing still works! So what did I do with it? We replaced it with a cheap laptop so that I had something to use, and took the "broken" one and hooked it up to the TV in the livingroom with an HDMI cable (I think thats what its called-or a VGA cable?) Well, either way, I can now view my laptop on the TV in the livingroom. We don't have cable ( i refuse to pay 100 bucks for 350 channels I WON'T watch/don't need lol). So we use the laptop hook up for watching netflix or hulu and other shows or games etc.

Am I the only cheap bastard that does this? LOL!!!!! Hey, it still "works"...You just can't use the screen. And if I am going to pay $100 for a new screen on that thing, I might as well just spring for the $300 laptop I scored on clearance . Right? Anyone else with me on this? lol.

Just make sure you're using a chill mat for it! Or else you'll overheat the thing and it really will be a paper weight. And we occasionally hook up the computer to the tv for a variety of reasons.

nope I do this too, I often complain because my parents are forcing me t pay for their overpriced cable as part of my rent when I never even watch it, all I need is my 7.99 netflix membership and I'd be happy. Plus, no reason to throw it away if it works, I think it's pretty clever what you did!

That's genius, I need to go get me a cable so I can hook the laptop up to the TV and stop watching netflicks on a tiny screen and start watching it on the big tv. Cheep, NO.. You are genius!!

Well at the moment, I don't have a cooling mat for it. We purchased a stand that lifts it about an inch off the bottom of the entertainment center though, so its getting plenty of air. I know all too well what it can do to it if it overheats lol. When I used to be a cam model, I was always on the bed or the floor with it and that darn thing would overheat and shut down on me mid-cam session lol. Tell ya what, my clients were none too happy bout that one!

LMAO! Well thank you!
Can I get you to tell my husband that I am a genius!? haha! I want this in writing

Thing is, I can't stand throwing something away/selling or giving it away unless it is completely useless to me.

Not alone, though i would have approached it a bit differently. I would have looked on ebay for the same model with a different problem and a working screen and replaced the screen myself. But then. I'm a tech geek...

Your solution's good too, though.

Nope, I had a friend that did this, its a great way to save money, the internet has just about everything you could ever want to watch. I'm pretty cheap too. The only thing I'm willing to splurge on is sex toys so I specifically save money in everything else I do so I can have more leftover for toys.

I think this is increasingly common nowadays, especially among 20-somethings. TV is on its way out, in my opinion.

I DO THIS. My old laptop died and I scrapped it for parts, including the screen, the ram and the keyboard. XD I plan to sell them to make up some of the costs for my new laptop.
