Advice for starting a home business

Contributor: deltalima deltalima
I've always been passionate about cosmetics. I used to work for Mac/Lancome and have been making my own makeup for the last 4 years. I finally have a bit of free time now and am thinking of starting a small business to sell my creations. Does anyone have their own cosmetic company or any small business and have useful advice to share? Thanks

Start up a website and promote, promote, promote. Give some away to friends so that they can promote you as well. How in the world did you start making makeup that soooo rocks! You go girl!

I'm certainly no cosmetics expert - but I would think that cosmetics require testing to prove that they are safe - especially when used around the eyes. I'd do some research and proceed carefully.

Bingo! That's what I was going to say. There are many more regulations when it comes to creating skincare lines and makeup lines. This is why people typically seek out a professional company to help launch their lines.

If it were me and I were trying to do this, I would first look into government grants for women who want to start their own business and see how far that will get you and then start looking for investors. (This will be the hardest part, because the market is saturated with products like this.)

It's definitely doable, it's just going to be an uphill battle from the very beginning and most start up companies do not turn a profit for the first five years.
