I was thinking earlier about a really awkward moment that I had and it got me searching online for other funny awkward moments. I found quite a few, and most of them I have experienced.
I figured I'd make a fun poll to see how many EF'ers have experiences these same awkward moments. I made this into a comparative discussion only because I'm able to add a lot of different polls in one thread, rather than create a whole bunch and flood the main page of the forum.
I've made the voting private for those who are shy.

This has happened to me. This was actually the type of awkward moment that got me thinking about awkward moments in general. Someone says, "how are you?" and you respond, "not much" lol. It's not so bad if you immediately catch yourself but if a minute or two go by and you JUST realize what happened, you pray that they didn't notice (and they obviously did).
03/05/2013
This happens to me more than I should admit.
03/05/2013
Definitely!! A very awkward moment--they KNOW you were not listening to a word they said!!!
03/05/2013
A similar thing happened to me once.
I think most people realize you just said the wrong thing out of habit. I know I just laugh if someone does it to me, I don't think it means they're not listening. I hope others think like I do when I do it to them!

03/05/2013
How about the awkward moment when out of habit and without thinking you say "Love you, goodbye" on the phone to someone you did not intend to say that to (business associate, someone you do not know very well, etc.).
03/05/2013
It happens all the time because my head is in the clouds and half the time I don't even pay attention.
03/05/2013
Yeah, this happens to me a lot.

Oh, yeah. Sometimes I get nervous when I meet someone for the first time. I've done this, and I've also had the following exchange:
Them: "Hi!"
Me: "Hi! How are you?"
Them: "Fine. How are YOU?"
Me: "Good. How are YOU?"
Oops!
This has be the best discussion ever, btw.

It's bad, yeah, but it's worse when you just can't hear someone and you assume what they said.
Like me, when I assumed the person taking my order asked what I wanted my side to be:
Cashier: Would you like your soup as your side?
Me: POTATO CHIPS *derrrrrrrrrp*

Usually this happens when leaving a restaurant/bar and you realize that you're parked near each other.
03/05/2013
All my friends and I have done this--we just laugh it off.
03/05/2013
Ahhh yes! The worst is with people I don't know very well, and if I'm walking behind them I don't know if I should say hello again to them or not :S
03/05/2013
Yeah, I've walked into completely strange buildings on campus claiming I had class there to get out of this! D:
03/05/2013
I don't know why this hasn't happened to me yet, you'd think it was a more common thing.

The most extreme of this that ever happened to me is I have friends I see only every few years. We went out to lunch and we said our goodbyes. I was crying as I drove down the road, and had to stop at the pharmacy for a moment. I turned the corner and guess who was there? lol
03/06/2013

Spinach dip anyone??? Oh, yeah--during a presentation for the county commissioners.....(Not e: Do NOT eat before a presentation!!)
03/05/2013
LOL!
It's also awkward when someone tells you and there are no mirrors around. You try to get it but then the other person says something like, "no- over" and you're like, "did I get it?" and they're like, "no-over a bit more" and this continues for a good minute or two.

Most times I'll just say something if I notice someone has something in their teeth. I hope that people tell me when I have something stuck in mine but I usually check after eating to cut down on incidents.
03/06/2013
no, i havent noticed it.

Yes, and I usually will put my finger up to my teeth to let them know.
03/07/2013
Ugh, yes and usually when I'm in a meeting or right before a meeting starts and I grabbed something quick to eat.
03/08/2013
Yeah, been in that situation a few times.
03/11/2013
I don't think it's awkward when I tell them, but their reaction can make it so that it is. I'd want to know, so I say something.

My zippers are notorious for falling. People will point it out to me and it doesn't bother me, but I find that if I don't turn around to zip up and just zip up in front of everyone, it pushes the awkwardness back on to the person who pointed it out. (Unintentionally I assure you!)

No, but in 8th grade my class took a trip to italy and I was walking with on of my teachers (a male teacher I knew well) and I was holding his arm and then I kissed it! A little peck like I do with my father. I was so embarrassed but I don't think he noticed or maybe he just ignored it. I did not have a crush on him or anything, I guess it was just ingrained from holding onto my fathers arm and acting similarly.

I experience this awkwardness quite frequently.
03/05/2013
I've never experienced this because I rarely hug people unless they initiate it.
03/05/2013
Very frequently!!!
03/05/2013
-___- Oh man, this is bad. Like when you're both sorta kinda moving to hug, so it's like doing a very subtle, weird dance...but neither of you are sure if the movements the other person is doing are hug movements...and you really want to hug them so you push it...and then you actually hug and realize the other person wasn't moving in to hug you ........realllllllllll llllllllly bad.

(Normally, I love to hug, but I think most girls have experienced this one with that one persistent guy who just doesn't get it.)
03/05/2013
Yes! I have this problem sometimes when we go over to My Guy's friends house. They do a pound and slap or weird handshake thing and I'm a girl... I don't do that stuff! So either way I'm in an awkward position, so I usually hug.
03/05/2013
I don't like social hugs! It's not that I don't like hugs, I just dislike them as a greeting/goodbye, that seems silly. If I want or feel I should give a hug, there should be emotion to back it up?

Yes, this has happened to me a few times. I'm a very huggy person and I genuinely love almost everyone I know/meet. My natural instinct is to hug pretty much everyone, both hello and goodbye.
I have an aunt who, I learned, hates even being touched, much less hugged. She stiffened up like I wouldn't have thought possible when I hugged her. I've learned to be more careful since then. I just move towards the person, opening my arms. If they open theirs (which happens about 95% of the time), I'll hug them; otherwise, I switch to a handshake.

I pretty much only hang out with people who hug a lot so I'm rarely in doubt.

Oh yeah. Happened to me. It's also bad when it's someone you just met and you know they're going in for the hug and they are not letting up on it.
03/11/2013
I find it more awkward when someone you're not really close with hugs you. I have one really specific memory from high school. I was acquainted with this guy, who I knew him from one class a few years before and who was currently dating a friend of mine. There was a day where I ran into him as I was headed out to the parking lot after I was leaving some after school activity. I ended up talking to him as we walked to our cars and when we reached mine, he sort of surprise attacked, hugged me. And I, of course, forgot to stop my mouth before I said, "Oh... I didn't know we did that."

Yep, I just laugh that off and pretend I meant to do that if anyone is looking at me.
03/05/2013
Constantly---and I am the one that makes and installs the signs on the damn doors, too!!!!
03/05/2013
I do this all the time & it's usually with people watching or right behind me. I laugh or crack a joke. The worst is repeatedly trying the door before you 'get' it! I see people do this all the time.
I also tend to push on the wrong side of the push bar so the door won't open even though it IS a push open door, LOL.

Yup, constantly. I have also walked into mirrored walls before, then apologized. Derp.
03/05/2013
And that awkward moment when you try to push the pull door and end up just running into it.
03/05/2013
No nos on this one! HAHA!

My campus has these doors everywhere that are totally uniform in appearance so you can't tell where the hinge is. I always push on the hinge side

I feel like this happens to me ALL the time in Europe. My husband finally pointed out that in many situations the doors are opposite of what would be normal in the US. Also with all the old building many of the doors are just random push or pull. In the US more often than not doors slide open or pull out when going in, pull open to leave.

Hahahaha, this has sort of happened to me, except I was pregnant and having a bad day so I said I wasn't pregnant and left them stammering apologies. I feel sort of bad about it now, but I was very visibly pregnant (just shy of 9 months) so they were probably just dumbfounded by my denying the baby.

A woman who owned the movie theater asked me while I waited in line with my male friend for a movie to open. Worse, she wouldn't back down after I said I wasn't pregnant! She followed with, "Did you just have a baby?" Everyone in line was listening to this. I just said, "Nope, just fat...thanks" with an ironic smile. She couldn't get it through her head & just kept staring at me, surprised acting and said, "But you look pregnant!" She never apologized, I guess she thought I was lying?

this actually happened to me in high school - i had been out of school sick and started a new antidepressant which made me gain weight only in my stomach, when i came back a teacher asked me (while i was turning in an assignment none the less) "is that the reason you've been out" with a smile, pointing at my stomach. I was absolutely mortified, as i was already self-conscious about gaining so much weight, i just quietly said "no," holding my stomach and went back to my seat where a boy in my class who over heard harassed me saying "you pregnant?" the whole way back. It was my freshman year of highschool and i was 15, single and sexless. Needless to say when my mother found out (i cried to her about it when i got home) she was furious, and spoke to my principle one-on-one about the issue, so during our finals the teacher ended up taking me out of class and giving me an apology, which was almost as embarrassing for me at that age.
03/05/2013
Not really: I have a stomach disorder and was heading to the ER with an EXTREME case of the bloats (normally I'm underweight so I don't get asked if I'm pregnant) but the ER nurse asked if I was pregnant and how far along.

I'm appalled that a teacher said this to a 15 yr old, (even if she thought it) & with other students nearby? Unbelievable, I actually hurt hearing about that! And singling you out, again in front of everybody, was a horrible idea! Wasn't she ever a teenager before? How clueless can you be, geez.

Someone in a grade behind me showed up at our high school winter formal in a bad knock off version of my dress. She glared at me all evening as if offended & angry. When we were face to face, I smiled & told her she had great taste. She blew me off by just glaring at me. I got so much hate from her & her friends all evening, like I did something to intentionally offend them, WTF? At least I can be smug in the knowledge that I looked fabulous. I had a later boyfriend steal the picture of me & my date, (I found that out about 7 years after the fact, when he admitted to taking several other pictures from my house).

This is awkward enough but I remember one time back in high school, I thought I seen my friend (from the back) and I ran up to him and smacked his ass. The guy turned around and it was totally NOT the person I thought it was. I had no idea who it was and it was awkward seeing him in the hallways for the rest of the time I was at that school.

Gee, I can't compete with all the other comments! I have called someone's name when I saw what I thought was that person far off. But, usually, they don't turn around & I figure it out. The one time the man turned around, I laughed & said, "Sorry, I thought you were someone I know!" It doesn't really faze me. But I didn't grab them, either, so...
03/05/2013
I have terrible eyesight so I never scream someone's name.
03/05/2013
This happened in the sense that when I was younger I lost my brother in a crowd, saw him, walked over to him angrily and put my hand on the top of his head and started chastising him and realized it wasn't my brother but a strange younger boy, I froze then ran away lol( I was like ten I think).

In high school & college I had guys ask me out when I wasn't interested in them, but because they were some of the very few who got up the nerve to ask, I said yes to be nice, (usually, I had to do the asking!). The date was often as boring as they were, so they didn't ask me out again. I think they were expecting me to be someone I wasn't & I turned out to just be normal & nice, so they were disillusioned. A few turned out to be really interesting & we had a good time. I will never regret being nice instead of crushing their feelings as so many careless girls do. That said, I never would go on a date with someone I really objected to, but I was only exposed to a small group from the schools where everyone knew everyone else's background.

That's why I don't wear dresses...knew there was a reason!
03/05/2013
This happened a few times when I was little & part of my dress was caught in my tights waistband. It never happened in public.
I did see it happen at work once. A very large woman came out of the restroom with the entire back of her skirt tucked into her pantyhose. I was probably more awkward for all the men who happened to be in that area at the time. They were too scared to say anything, but another woman saw before she got too far. The woman just laughed, fixed it & went on her way. She had a marvelous sense of humor for which she was well known. If she was embarrassed, it never showed!

I always check my appearance thoroughly before leaving a restroom.
03/05/2013
I always check myself out before leaving the bathroom too.
03/06/2013
Haha, never.

My boss ran up behind me and yanked my dress down. Probably most mortifying moment of my life, mostly because I had been walking around campus for about ten minutes..
Cute poll SKTB!!

It happened when I got out of my car now I make sure to grab my dress when getting out of my car I grab my butt and dress at the same time just to check
03/14/2013
Never in my undies, but in a pair of capri leggings. A group of old ladies were sitting at a table near the restroom and promptly started laughing uproariously. Mortified. But, I might not have noticed for a while otherwise.

03/05/2013
Yes! But if it's a friend I usually just tell them I did. Uh. Guy thing?
03/05/2013
I have next to no sense of smell, so anybody who knows me knows its also kind of silly to ask "Oh gosh, what is that smell?" cause I'll just shrug, even if it wasn't me farting. Heeheehee
03/06/2013
Haha, yeah. This has happened.

03/05/2013
Yes.
03/05/2013
It's happened to me but I don't find this especially awkward.
03/06/2013
This has happened to me, but it's more irritating than awkward. (I'm the one washing the dishes!)

I think it's more awkward if you're trying to get the person to not notice you're putting the dish in the sink, but there really isn't any way that the person won't notice lol.

Definitely--head to nearest bathroom!!!!

Yes and it's best to be quick & as subtle as possible by making it look like you're doing something else. Such as scratching the back of you leg, or you go to adjust your shoe & on the way up, adjust your pants leg by straightening or tugging it down, which should dislodge the problem.

This is especially bad when the wedgie is just from your underwear, not your pants. How can you pick that in a subtle way?
03/05/2013
I just laugh and pull. Happens to everyone.
03/05/2013
This hasn't happened to me but one day I went to the mall and realized I had my shirt on backwards. lol I just left it until I got home.
03/05/2013
I try and make a run for the bathroom!
03/06/2013

For me it's more like I can't stop laughing to tell the joke/story and everyone is just staring at me like "this better be as funny as you're building it up to be", and then I know it won't be as funny when I tell it and that makes me keep laughing even longer!
03/05/2013
If i an really sleepy i get into laughing fits and cant stop laughing. Its really bad, plus i get this really annoying uncontrollable laugh its ridiculous
03/05/2013
Psh! I laugh at what I wanna laugh at and nobody can stop me!

I've experienced most of these yes and I have to laugh about the one with the dress. I wore a skirt twice this week at work for the first time in over a decade. Just what do you think was on my mind everytime I returned from the ladies room?
03/08/2013
Many times, I've daydreamed/remembered something hilarious that I heard or saw, and started laughing for no apparent reason! I laugh pretty easily, so this has happened in a variety of inappropriate situations! I'm sure people have thought I must be insane. Well, I probably would go insane — if I weren't crazy.
