7 Music Trends Whose Return Must Be Stopped

Contributor: Jul!a Jul!a
"Like fashion, music trends go in cycles. Artists get nostalgic for the stuff they listened to as kids and try to bring it back. That's why there are music fads from the 80s and 90s due to jump back on center stage at any moment. Ladies and gentlemen, there must be a way to stop them.

Here are trends that must remain in the past... at all costs."

I only remember a few of the things on this list, but I vaguely recall hearing about a few of the others. I know my husband knows a few more than I do. What do you guys think of this list? Would you add anything else in or take anything out?

Jam band funk crap that basically only sounds good to people who are thoroughly stoned 24/7

There's a local indie radio station in my little southern beach city and sometimes they play what I consider terrific rock music, ranging from Johnny Cash to the Decemberists and usually have a semi indie and folk vibe. Many shoutouts to good local artists.

However, when they aren't playing what I consider to be the good stuff, they seem to cater to all the hippy dippy stoners who still think Widespread Panic is the shit and a trillion and one no-name bands. Atrocious. Horrible lyrics, bad music. So damn annoying. More recently they've been playing this one song link by Ziggy Marley multiple times a day and I mean it's not a *bad* song, per se, but holy crap that gets old fast. How many times can you say the same cheesy line over and over with no variation at all ever???

That doesn't really belong on the list, exactly, but I'm so frickin tired of it lol. It was never even that cool to begin with.

BUT, the whole mumbling high pitched pseudo-free spirit hipster guy singing to half indie rock half dance synth music with whistling, clapping and/or group chorus (or all three) is so god damn played out lol.

Here's a list of the past several years summer hit type deals:

link (MGMT 2008)
link (Passion Pit 2009)
link (Edward Sharpe 2010)
link (Foster the People 2011)

No offense to you, but the chick that wrote this has most likely not heard music - or even seen a radio - since 2006. Soulja Boy? "Umbrella"? Matchbox 20? These are "current" threats? Not unless you live in a time warp...

Edit: This article is dated 2008, I just realized. That explains the time warp.

I recognized all the older references. Hardly recognized any of the newer ones.

Can we at least have an 'AMEN' that the tight snare drumming won't ever return? Even the drummer of The Go-Gos admits it sounds ridiculous.

Oh, they forgot in the 'warbling diva and creepy deep rapper trope' the group Aqua. Admittedly, the lyrics actually relate to each other, so maybe they don't count.

Actually I think that sound is still a lot more popular and ehem "influential" than you'd imagine.

It's just more synthesized.

My bad! I also don't usually pay much attention to the dates of articles that are posted and before I was delivery driving for a year until a year ago, I didn't listen to the radio really. Since I left that job I don't listen to the radio really. I mostly listen to my iPod and don't add "new" music very often.

No, I was the one that was being an idiot for not checking the date lol. I got snarky and then had to retract my snark. Nothing sadder

HEYYYYY!!!! Leave the hair metal alone!!! Have you checked out those butts!!! Try to get a good butt shot nowadays. OK, I am an 80's fan, yeah, most of them sucked, but there were some good ones! Check out Whitesnakes ass and tell me you wouldn't let him "Slide It In", or.... all right I give, just saw what they look like now. Sooo sad.
