How do you feel about the "5 Second Rule" when you drop food?
5 Second Rule

If I've mopped the kitchen floor and drop something that day I'll almost always eat it. It also depends on what the item is. If it's something like a pretzel -- that's fine. If I drop something soft, like a banana, I'll always throw it away.

Depends on whether or not the floor is is clean.
In the woods, if I put my sandwich on a log, I will eat no matter how long it has been on that log. The woods is much cleaner then a kitchen counter top or floor.

For me it depends on if it's wet food or dry food. Something like a piece of cheese? No. Something like a cracker? Probably.

if i drop something outside, i won't eat it, but if i drop it inside (& the floor isn't completely filthy) i'll eat it. but it's always been the 10 sec rule for me, lol.

In our house, if it drops on the floor it's about a 1 second rule, as the dogs are like instant vacuum cleaners
08/23/2011
It mostly depends on what kind of food I've dropped. Candy or something that isn't going to pick much up is fine. If pizza lands toppings-down, I'm screwed, but if it lands crust down it's safe.

I once spilled a frappuccino in my car RIGHT as I left Starbucks and it was hard to resist the urge to suck it up off the floor-- I have coffee addict issues. (Similar to my friend who has often said "Don't spill that beer! I'm British, I'll suck it up out of the carpet!")

Around the house, maybe. In a public place, NEVER. And for us it's a two-second rule.
08/23/2011
I will still eat it as long as the floor is clean and I can wash it off. I like to exercise my immune system.

My rule of thumb is at home, yes, at work, no. xD I work in food service anyway so it's kind of a rule to throw things away that touch the floor.
08/24/2011
My floor yes, it is usually pretty clean. Work NO WAY! (I work in a nursing and psych facility and that would be beyond nasty)
08/24/2011
I have no problem eating things I've quickly dropped, although there are of course exceptions - some floors are definite no-go areas. Which is sad. I love food so much, throwing it out after a little floor contact always seems such a waste.
08/24/2011
No germ-o-phobe here. Give your immune system some credit - even a little work out. But you'd expect no less from a guy likes rimming his gal!
08/24/2011
I'm a clean freak, but I will eat something I dropped if I REALLY want it and the floor looks spotless. If I pick it up and there's a hair or something on it I don't eat it.

I refuse to eat food off the floor!

Scientifically, this is a no go. The moment anything hits the floor it is contaminated. However, if I drop something on MY floor, and I know the floor is clean...I might wipe it off or wash it off and eat it. However, other then in my own home..where CLOROX rules, forget it.

That's very true. And I'm glad that I remembered something from my science lessons.

I'm with the majority: if it's hard, I'll probably eat it; if it's soft, I'll throw it away.

It mostly depends on what the surface I drop the food onto looks like and what the food is. Something that's gonna pick up tons of dirt and etc I'll just throw out. If it's something that I'm in the process of getting ready to cook I'll wash it off if I can, if not I pitch it.

It depends on the food and the condition of my floor. If it's shedding season (for my dogs) and I haven't swept or vacuumed that day, bleh! Hair in food is icky.
A funny story; when I was in college a friend and I were shopping and we went to a place called the French Baker. They had croissants, Napoleons, tarts, rolls, and pâté fois gré and many pastries. We bought our croissants and an eclair to eat later. We were in the parking lot and the beautiful hand made eclair fell out of the box an onto the ground. We looked at each other, looked at the pastry laying on the ground, and grabbed it and shoved it into our mouths before anyone could see what pigs we were.
Hey, it was GOOD pastry.

According to experiments done by the guys at Myth Busters, the more protein a food has, the more bacteria it will pick up. So, a piece of bologna is going to gather more bacteria than say, a pretzel, no matter if it's been 1/2 a second or a couple of minutes.

It depends on the consistency of the food. Hard? sure... Soft...probably not.
08/24/2011
Depends on the food and what it gets dropped on.
If its a hamburger or something you can always just tear off the bottom of the bun

It doesn't matter what it is. Once it hits the floor, I'll no longer eat it.
08/24/2011
I'll eat it unless the floor is gross.
08/24/2011
It depends why the last time I cleaned was.
08/24/2011
Depends on the cleanliness and where you dropped it.
08/24/2011
I agree with the majority - it depends on how clean the floor is. For me it also depends on what kind of food it is - as someone upthread mentioned. If it's wet or sticky food then I'm not eating it, but if it's pretty dry and the floor is clean I will eat it.
