5 Ridiculous sex myths everybody believes

Contributor: Jul!a Jul!a
"What do you know about sex? Surely there aren't many of you who would answer "nothing." Even if you're the most inexperienced or inept lover of all time (which we've been assured you are), you at least have some preconceived notions about sex based on the stories and anecdotes and stand-up comedy you've heard over the years.

But here's the thing -- even with all of that going for you, the real and correct answer is still probably "nothing." For instance, you probably think ..."

I actually knew one or two of the things in this article, but the rest were new to me. Given the subject nature, I just had to share with you guys. So how about the rest of you? How many of these things did you know, or not know? Would you add anything else to the list?

Great little article. I did know the casual sex myth, and to some extent the sperm longevity myth (though I did not realize they were able to survive that long). The others, while not especially surprising, were news to me. And it's good to see stuff like this debunked.

Me: ... Wait a tic...

Gotta love that cracked.com humor. I actually believed the myth about men and women's sexual peaks being more-or-less fixed, but the way it was explained made a lot more sense. And the whole thing about sexual imagery reducing customer recall... I find that to be unspeakably awesome, and I'll have to remember to whip this article out next time someone says, "Sex sells."

mamma mia makes more sense because of the sperm one (not that it was a great stumper to begin with).

I'm pretty much in agreement with what they are trying to say - except for one thing. There is no doubt in my experience that men and women peak at different times. Leaving desire aside - that's personal and not driven by the clock. I'm talking about capability/capacity.

There is no doubt that a man's sexual capacity - if not desire - wanes with age. Think about it - Viagra, Levitra & Cialis are all block-buster drugs for those of who still have plenty of desire but limited capacity.

Women on the other hand just need a little good lube and they are ready to go. Getting and keeping an erection is way more demanding than women understand. As a 20-something the refractive period (the time from climax to a new erection) can be minutes - then it's minutes, then hours.

Huh. That actually makes the "myth" pretty interesting. In one sense (hormonal), it's true. In another way (desire), it's not. It's a freaking Schrödinger's myth!

Okay, that's not quite the same concept, but I'm always up for a Schrödinger's cat joke.

So women are more likely to hookup if they can be assured that the guy has good skills. I wonder how a man can signal that?
