"Over the years Disney has gotten a lot of grief for its "inaccurate even for a cartoon" interpretations of historical heroes like Mulan and Pocahontas and Lilo. And it's all just so unnecessary; history is full of royal women who kicked all kinds of ass.

Although some of these stories would have to be toned down a bit ..."

I always love reading about women who are just all around badasses, and I do agree that Disney has a tendency to skew some of their works just a wee bit, so I really enjoyed reading 5 Real Princesses Too Badass for Disney Movies. What do you guys think? Think anybody else should be on this list?

I don't know how Disney would make most of these stories appropriate for children! They are really cool though.

This is awesome. And I could see Pingyang's story being retold in an appropriate-for-childr en manner!

Amazing. History is really quite more than what people make it out to be. It'd be really amusing to see Disney try to tackle some of those.

Hold on: Lilo? As in Lilo and Stitch? I know I'm not all that familiar with Disney films, so there may be another Lilo out there, but this is the only one I'm familiar with. So Lilo from Lilo and Stitch was a real person? Was Stitch real, too?

Great article, Sam!

You know I'm not entirely sure if Lilo was real, although I can pretty much guarantee that Stitch wasn't

And thanks!

That's impressive!! And yeah I had the same "wtf" moment when I read Lilo...may have to dig into that a bit more.

Official Disney Princesses: Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, and Rapunzel.

There are three unofficial princesses; Alice, Tinker Bell, and Giselle.

I think Snow White would have been way more badass if they had kept her as she was in her Grimms Fairy Tales..

It's called "Tangled".

I've yet to hear anything about Norse Mythology, but that'll require a lot of toning down, too. Valkyries are - technically - daughters of royalty, and therefor Princesses. However, I did create a Disney-type synopsis of the Brunhilde and Seigfred cycle when I was a teenager, but have yet to polish it up and send it to Disney with my soul in payment.

BTW - if they ever "disney-fy" Queen Bodaccia (or however anyone chooses to spell her name), I'll eat lube for a year.
