5,000 dollars to change your eye color?

Contributor: namelesschaos namelesschaos
So I just found this story link about a doctor who spend ten years and is likely to spend at least a couple more perfecting a procedure to turn brown eyes blue. Ten years and only knows how much money (and this articles says link they plan to raise 15 million to get thing up and running) for a purely cosmetic procedure!? Wow! My father was blind for the final years of his life, for someone to under go a eye surgery for something so cosmetic...i just can't understand it.

Anyway your responses.

No matter how safe this Dr. Homer claims the procedure is, I don't want to mess around with my eyes. If a person wants to have different eye colors, just go buy some color contacts and change to whatever color they prefer.

You said "for someone to under go a eye surgery for something so cosmetic"... but isn't it sort of similar to breast enhancement, etc? I personally would never be able to afford any of these types of things.... and if I could, I probably would find better ways to spend the massive am mounts of money lol. I have brown eyes, but I have coloured contacts so when I feel like changing my eye colour, I just pop them in. I guess it's just nice having the option to change your look every once in awhile.

As much as I'd LOVE to turn my green eyes (if they found a way of changing green too) back to the beautiful blue they were as a teenager, I wouldn't go through that.
Besides, I don't have the nice golden blonde hair to go with them....hehe.

I'd love to make my eyes brown because they are bright blue and I've always hated the attention I get in public from them so I wear brown contacts a lot of the time...but I would never get a procedure like this!

I'd rather get vision correction, but I can't stand having anything near my eyes, including eyeliners and eye dropper bottles.

I love my brown eyes. I wouldn't pay to change them.

My brown eyes are not opaque. They have multiple layers and different shades of browns, golds, and greens. As much as I may also love for them to be blue, I'd rather get colored contacts to do that because I wouldn't want to permanently lose the beautiful color combinations my eyes naturally have.

I would never do this. My eyes are lovely colored changing between brown and green.

I might do this. Boring brown eyes.

Well, I already have blue eyes and they like to change colors from gray to light blue to dark blue and at one point they were lavendar for an hour or so (I was freezing my ass off at the time). I would never want to do anything to my eyes that could potentially harm them or permanently damage my eyesight. That being said, I understand that some people with brown eyes hate it and if it's better in the long run than wearing cosmetic lenses, I can see why they'd be interested. I'm in a "live and let live" stage of my life. I really don't care what someone does that could potentially disfigure or damage themselves so long as they aren't pushing it on me.

No thanks. I have colored contacts that change both the color, design and size of my iris.

I had Lasik and my vision wasn't all that terrible. So that was elective eye surgery. Not really cosmetic, though. I wouldn't do it (but I love my eye color) but I know people who would if they had the money.

The iris is not just pigment it serves as a muscle to dilate and contract the pupil. This seems dangerous to me no matter what he says because a laser being shawn on such a sensitive tissue sounds as if it could harm the muscle coordination. If the eye is unable to control the amount of light that shines in this can lead to sever vision issues. It just seems risky in my brown eyes.

Oh, no. Heavens, no. Even if I had all the money in the world, nobody's getting near my eyes until I'm dead.

The thought of the procedure actually makes me nauseous.

Getting breast implants wont make you blind.

I would never. I would not mess with my eyes.

I wonder if the doctor ever consider the unfortunate implications of that whole blue eyed thing.

Exactly, the doc may say it is safe but until I see a large peer-reviewed study following patients for years, I basically treats this as if the doctor said he just invented the blind-o-matic 3000.

If it turns out to be a safe procedure (which is what it essentially sounds like), then I can see people doing it. after all the guy's a surgeon, not your typical boob on the street. Honestly, I can't see myself changing my own eye color for 5,000$. i'd rather get a boob job or vision corrective surgery for that kind of money.
