When watching something in another language do you prefer subtitles or dubs?

If a dub is well done I don't mind, but subtitles usually win.

Subtitles. Dubs drive me nuts.

99% of the time I'll pick to watch with subtitles. Dubs are rarely as good as the original.

I definitely prefer subtitles. I like hearing the actors' voices.

The only actor/actress I know of that stipulates in her contracts that she must do her own dubbing (in French) is Jodie Foster. It's her performance, and since she's capable of it, she wants it to be her voice the audience hears. Other actors don't seem to care, and in the case of Schwarzenegger I imagine the cost of getting him to do the dubbing in German was too high for the company importing the movie to that region/market.

Subs. Sometimes i find myself just watching the movie and not being interested in the dialogue. words aren't too important

Dubs makes me crazy, so I prefer subtitles. I often turn on subtitles, read them all for the first 1/3 of the movie so I know what's going down, and then try to focus more on the film and gathering meaning without the subtitles.

Subtitles only. I can't stand dubbed stuff, although there is one exception. Old kung-fu movies. The dubs are hilarious.

I tend to prefer subtitles in live action but dubs for animated stuff.
I definitely prefer subs--normally the dub actors just don't have the same acting ability that the originals did. And voice is so important!

Preferably with subtitles, but even then it's annoying, because I find myself watching the subtitles more than the acting.

It bothers me not to hear people's natural voices. I'm an actor, intonation can't be matched in voice overs. You miss out on some brilliant acting.

I prefer subtitles. Old martial arts movies are an exception because the dubbing just makes it so much more fun.

Subtitles, I want to hear the actors themselves, not some bored American.
However, sometimes the quality compensates so that I can listen to both the original version and the dubbed version-Studio Ghibli productions (like Howl's Moving Castle) are great examples.

I absolutely hate subtitles. I only watch english movies or shows. If there is nothing on at all, I might flick over to the foreign channel (they often have news in a number of languages) just as background noise. I don't care what they are saying - I'm just fascinated with foreign lanuages ... they are sexy. But I'm not interested in what's actually happening in it.

Subtitles! The dubbed voices always seem a little off and it's distracting.

I actually am not that picky one way or the other. I don't think I'm as easily bothered by it as other people.

When I was learning French I would watch movies dubbed in French with French subtitles at the bottom. That really helped a lot with learning it, because between reading and hearing the words I could figure it out a lot easier.

I prefer subtitles. I sometimes turn on the subtitle thing on my TV when watching movies so I don't miss anything. My Man doesn't like to see what people are going to say, so he usually turns it off.

Getting him to watch a foreign subtitled film is like pulling teeth. He'll walk around the house, attempting a really bad French accent, making fun of the movie. He was raised in a somewhat trashy, anti-intellectual household. No class, sometimes, that man.

I usually watch foreign films myself. The only subtitled movie he liked was Inglorious Bastards which had some subtitles. But lots of stuff blowing up.

There are a couple movies that have decent dubbing but for the most part I like the subtitles a lot more ^^

It depends on the type of movie and how good the dubbing is. Some movies can get away with poor dubbing because of the context of the movie but others, I would prefer subtitles.

I get bored with dubs. Subtitles are fine, sometimes just with a casual glance at the subs, I can understand some of the dialogue.

Subtitles as the voices never seem to match up and I like being able to hear the emotions through different languages.
