For some reason whenever I hear everyone I know raving about a show, it just makes me not want to watch it because they just insist that I HAVE to watch it and that it's the best thing ever. Ie LOST, The Office, Desperate Housewives for me. Or I want to watch it so I can disagree with them. Does anyone else avoid shows because they feel over-recommended?
Shy away from popular shows?

I watch things that catch my fancy no matter what. A lot of the things I love have actually been recommended to me.

If I like a show, I'll watch it. Most people recommending stuff to me usually know my tastes, so I often like things my friends tell me to watch.

I watch what I like, and some of them are not the most popular shows. If someone recommend a show, I'll check it out to see if it suits my taste or not.

I sometimes do this, so that I can avoid the hype and watch it and base my opinion of it solely on its own merit.

I live in China. That means, I am not aware of all the hype surrounding a new show, or the people raving about new programs.
I see a new program on the TV guide I get, download the first few episodes watch just to see what's it about. More often than not, I delete, but every once in a while I'll find something worth keeping. "Breaking In" and "Community" for example, but when I went to look when they'd be back on, I discover that they are not highly rated which ticks me off as it seems... every show I fall for, gets cancelled.

I will watch it and make my own choice

"Other" because I write about TV, so...
I only start watching a show after it's become The Hottest Thing Ever. I'm interested in representation/narrati ve/jargonjargonjargon and it helps tremendously to know what people are watching and loving.

a good show is a good show. but not all shows that people rave about are good though.

"Other" because I avoid all mainstream TV - none of it is any good. The sitcoms, reality shows and all the vampire sh.. are all just rehashed old concepts.

I'd have never found a lot of shows I really like if I didn't listen to the hype.
03/23/2012
I never have that problem, we don't watch much telly around these parts!

I usually make an attempt to pacify, but I almost never like the show - Glee, all network reality shows, most network sit-coms.

I don't watch a ton of tv, but I try not to turn my nose up at stuff just because it's popular (both for tv shows and other things). Certainly shows can be overrated but lot of times things are popular for a reason and there's at least something to enjoy about it.
03/23/2012
It's a little bit of both I guess. Most of the time I catch a new show before any opinions are put out there being an at home mom and all.

There are excellent shows out there, but it looks like the stupid ones are very popular... Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh !

I haven't watched tv in years and just shrug off what people tell me about shows. I just buy DVDs/Blu-Rays of stuff I'm interested in or use Netflix is available.
