Usually whenever they make a book into a movie or a series they change it's cover. Personally I always prefer the original one to the remade one. What about you guys?

Original vs Remake: Which Book Cover Do You Prefer?
(55 posts)
Usually when they turn a book into a movie or a series, they remake the cover to include the cast in it. Personally, I much prefer the originals, but that's just me. What do you guys think?

On the whole, I prefer the original. Looking at my Sharpe books, I prefer the older ones, which have copies of real oil paintings as the cover, whereas the new ones either have hand-drawn ones, or pictures of Sean Bean. Not that I don't like Sean Bean, it's just that I like the paintings better.
But with some books, the newer ones are better:

I prefer original covers, hands down. I particularly don't like movie covers because they detract from the reader's imagination getting whole involved in the exposition. Once you see a setting or character on a movie cover, it's hard to imagine that place or person in your own light.

Either or...doesn't much matter to me!
09/13/2011
I like the older look of the originals

I generally prefer the originals simple because they're...well, they're the original.

Original cover. It's always more true to the story.

I usually prefer the original. The newer ones seem weird after that.

With the original, you can use your imagination, the way a book is intended to do.
Take for example the original Twilight book covers- They didn't actually show people, so you could imagine the characters however you want. Then they made movies and when you look at the movie cover books, you are expected to picture the actors instead of the actual characters. I don't actually like Twilight though, it was just the best example.
I also think that the original book cover artwork is more creative and honest then the movie artwork book covers.

I hate remakes of book covers after a TV show or movie release with the actors. It's so tacky.
09/14/2011
90% of the time, the original covers are so much better.
09/14/2011
Depends, mostly originals are better but there have been some remakes that have been really good.
09/14/2011
Honestly when it comes down to it I don't care. I get used so what ever copy I get is fine, but as far as aesthetics it depends on the book.
09/15/2011
I dont think it matters. You buy a book for whats inside.
09/15/2011
Doesn't matter as long as its an eye catcher.

I almost always prefer the original covers, that's what draws my attention to the book in the first place. Who cares if you have some scantily clad actress on the cover? That's so distasteful, and takes away from the original intention of the book. I have my own imagination, I'd like to be able to use it for myself, not have Hollywood tell me what to think, psssh.
09/18/2011
generally i prefer the original because i usually read the book before seeing the movie
09/18/2011
Makes no difference to me
11/13/2011
Doesn't really matter, in my opinion
11/19/2011
It depends on the book

As for the topic at hand, usually I prefer originals.

Some of the original covers are classics/iconic, so to fuck with them isn't cool in my book.
Plus, if I read from a book with the movie cover, it implies that I never heard of the book until now. Or that it's an adaptation of the movie version. Yeah, no.

It doesn't matter to me, but I like the original cover best.

I prefer the original covers to movie covers. However, Good Omens has two different printings and the second printing had much nicer covers, because it was what the authors originally wanted, the black cover and the white cover that go together. I own both, because they're epic.

The original most of the time...they touch the covers for L.O.T.R or Harry Potter and I stab them with a rusty spork! *glares at movie makers*
I love the movies but they're never close enough to the book that the book should have the actors on it.

Originals, definitely. Some of the remakes have merit and look nice, but in general, the originals are nicer to me!
12/19/2011
Definitely prefer the originals. Remakes usually just show pics of the actors, where original covers often have interesting artwork on them.
12/19/2011
it really doens't matter to me in general.. mostly atleast..

Originals are usually better.

I always feel like if you have the remake, then youre reading it just because of the movie, not because of a general interest!

Definitely the original.

I prefer the original covers, but I did have to break down and by the movie-remake version of a few books. My Jason Bourne books have seen better days, so I re-bought the trilogy and it had freakin' Matt Damon on the cover of them all...It kind of made the book look way more unappealing to me, even though I have no qualms with Matt Damon. I just missed the old-school covers.
08/21/2012
Usually the original

I will hunt to buy the original
08/22/2012
original always
08/22/2012
Somehow the remade book cover seems a little fake to me. I guess it increases book sales, but if I am buying a book, I would rather the cover be unaffiliated with the movie adaptation.

I will rarely buy a book with a movie cover on it. It bothers me. It's irrational but it bothers me.
08/25/2012
It doesn't really matter either way
08/25/2012
Covers dont really matter to me
08/26/2012
Almost always the originals.
08/26/2012
Doesn't matter to me as long as they don't change the content.
08/28/2012
Definitely prefer the originals.
09/05/2012
Original, especially when I don't agree with the casting. That way I can use my imagination easier without preconceived notions in my head.
09/05/2012
I prefer the original. I'm one of those people that has to read the book BEFORE the movie/tv series or it just ruins it for me.
09/05/2012
Doesn't matter to me. I do agree with DynamicKitty, in that I don't like when they put the movie/tv series stuff on the cover.
09/07/2012
I try to think of books and the movies that are based on them as two separate entities, and I quite dislike when the book cover changes to that of the movie. It feels less book-ish somehow, I suppose.
09/07/2012
Definitely depends on the book. Sometimes the reprint of an older book is better because it cuts back on the campiness
09/18/2012
Cat E.
I prefer the original covers. I do not like when they put actors on the cover.
