I think the more complicated answer is that smoking can be visually quite appealing. That is why, like explosions and burning cars/houses, it seems so nice in the movies. In real life, I resent the f*ck out of smokers and when friends and lovers step outside to smoke, they never seem to get far enough away. I have a lot of allergies, including smoke, and a very sensitive nose.

I never "first date" smokers. If I know in advance they are smokers, it can be a deal-breaker. But if I get to know them in a different context and they have their smoking under control (ie I didn't realize they were smokers until after a few hours they politely ducked outside for a smoke) then it's less of an issue.
On the flipside, there was a submissive that I had great chemistry with but she had a smoking fetish and there was NO WAY I'd smoke for her. So non-smoking was a dealbreaker for her. LOL.

Images of people who are smoking in a sexy manner yes. If I'm with those people then no. Being asthmatic means I automatically am biased against anything involving the inhalation of smoke into lungs.

Smoking is a no go for me!!! I mean no offense to anyone who smokes and have friends who do, but they respect my feelings and avoid smoking at my house or around me when possible. I HATE the smell of it and especially the "kissing an ashtray" effect

The smell of cigarettes alone turns me off, but knowing the issues with human health/animal testing/environmental pollution etc. really does it for me.
