I recently got into this series and nearly none of my friends like it or have given it a try. I also love Call The Midwife. Let's squeal about new episodes together!
Is anyone else into Downton Abbey?

I like watching it! Most of my friends have found it boring.

I have recently discovered this show and I love it! I'm impatiently awaiting season 2's last disc in the mail from Netflix.

It's so good! I watched both of seasons 1 & 2 within a week of discovering it just so I could be up to date before season 3 started.
Who are your favorite characters?
Check out Call The Midwife if you haven't already. It's a period drama set in the 50s in London and focuses on a group of nurses and nuns who help low income families. It's so good. Cheeky, with nice humor and a very heartfelt plot. I love it.

I just finished the first season! I LOVE it!

I love both these shows. I discovered Downton Abbey on Netflix, watched all of Season 1, then bought Season 2 from Amazon for $12.00. I try not to miss the new episodes. My favorite characters? Are any of them really "likeable?" LOL! Maybe Daisy or the head housekeeper. I'm not a fan of the Rich, and although I love the show, I don't find most of the characters Upstairs to be very likeable. Their worlds revolve around their pretty little heads and don't extend much beyond there. (Yes, the Abbey was turned into a recovery hospital during WWI. But, this was really expected of the Rich back then, and my guess is they did it to keep up with others in their "class" and not be considered selfish. I see little that the people Upstairs do that isn't concerned with their own comfort and their own little Rich worlds. Interesting, but not really likable.
Cora seems the most likable upstairs. That she takes care of older servants when they are sick is commendable. She also talked her husband into getting a lawyer for Bates, the valet, but a lot of good it did. The Lord of the manor (can't remember his name) did stand up for his valet, as well. But, in a "he's my servant, and always has been" way.
I do find the interplay between the believed in "classes" and belief systems of the Manor House age interesting.
As for Call the Midwife, I like the characters. They are likable. I have read the book and the series really expands on the book while staying mainly true to it.
I was watching Call the Midwife with my youngest daughter and she said, "Mama that's kind of what you do." Similar.

I never knew Call the Midwife was based on a book! I'll have to check that out. I had no idea the memoirs were published. I guess that's what happens when you devour a season in one day though. I feel like rewatching it now.
I agree, the Upstairs are rather nauseating. I loved Sybil in the beginning and towards the end of the second season, but after seeing more interactions between her and Tom, I realize she isn't as in touch with lower class struggle as she likes to put on. She's very ignorant. I still love her though.
Bates is definitely a favorite for me. I look forward to seeing what happens with him. I heard rumors of a spin-off, but I don't want to google anything since there are so many spoilers. I have a feeling that if it's true, maybe it'll be based off of him.
Matthew and Isobel Crawley are lovely. I loved them from the start.
"What is a weekend" absolutely cracked me up! The emphasis that this series puts on staying true to class differences is one of the main things that drew me to it. I'm not a big history buff, but I love socioeconomics.
Oh and my inner diva came out when I saw Shirley Maclaine was in a few episodes. I LOVE HER! The comparison between 1920s British and American fashions was a treat for me too. Haha. I once wrote an entire term paper on the fashion changes for women from the 1910s to the '20s and what it signified in history.
I'm done rambling now. This is how much I love this show!

I love Call the Midwife!

It's so good. I guess the second season premiers at the end of March on PBS. I can't wait.

I cant stand Downton Abbey. Its so boring and melodramatic.
01/23/2013
No, but I really want to start it.

Did anyone else watch last night?
Oh. My. GOD!

I know! I'll keep it short and just say that it was a little graphic/traumatizing.

Not my thing, but my mom is really into it.

That nonsense? Lived it. Well, except for the end, obviously.

As a side note, does anyone else want to say, "Harriet Jones, Prime Minister," every time Mrs. Crawley comes on?

I like it pretty well.

I am halfway through the first series and I'm really enjoying it. Of course, other fans have been posting spoilers for the current season all over Twitter/Facebook, so I am bracing myself for the worst.

I've seen the first few episodes, and I would like to start again very soon.
03/07/2013
I haven't seen it.

I've watched the first seasons...but I'm really behind now, though! I thought acting, script, music were all spectacular, but what blew me away was the cinematography and the setting! So gorgeous!

I liked it until they killed off my favourite character.
03/09/2013
They killed off both of my two favorites...
