I read that Jack the Giant Slayer looks like it's going to loose Warner Bros. about $140 million. Let's just think about that number for a minute.
Hollywood isn't secretive about the fact that a lot of movies being made now are more spectacle than quality, relying on special effects instead of story to make it through the movie.
I'm not saying all movies with special effects are bad, just look at flicks like The Hobbit or The Avengers. Both had tons of effects but both also came from pretty strong source material, one from a beloved book and the other from decades of comics and a carefully designed universe that took several years and movies to set up. The difference between those type of movies and movies like Jack the Giant Slayer is that it's a bit more difficult to stretch out a simple fairy tale into a 2 hour block of entertainment.
