Favorite Indie Films

Contributor: kck kck
I love movies, be they Hollywood blockbusters, childhood straight-to-VHS memories, or accidentally-filming-i nstead-of-taking-a-pic ture clips. But I must say one of the genres I most appreciate is the Independent movie. There's something to be said about a well-done film with a teeny weeny budget and little to no media buzz. Personally, I think Indies are some of the most artistic films nowadays. I'm always looking for a good Indie movie to watch, so I want to ask you EFers...

What are your favorite Indie films?

(NOTE: Hollywood Indie imitations [like Little Miss Sunshine] do NOT count)

"Box of Moonlight."

"Boys Don't Cry" (Do NOT see if rape scenes upset you.)

"Requiem for a Dream"

"Dead Man" (Johnny Depp.....*gurgles making Homer Simpson noises*)

"This Movie is Not Yet Rated" about the bullshit that movies, especially Indies have to go through with the fulla shit MMPA "rating system" and the prudes who work for it

I LOVE Indies and could go on and on. When The Man and I go through the On Demand Menu, it appears that EVERY movie that I like due to title is an Indie, and they are twice as expensive as "regular" movies.

Bah! Requiem for a Dream scares the poo out of me. The festering wounds....

Thanks for sharing! I'll have to add those to my list

Lola rannt (Run, Lola, Run) was a decent movie

Nieman leibst mich (nobody loves me) was a good German flick

The Romero films could be considered Indie

Amelie was a good French flick

I saw an indie flick on Showtime once that I never caught the name of. It was about people using their lifespan as currency. I thought the message of the movie was awesome!

Anyone wanna speak out on "Loose Change"?

I just saw Whip It, and I loved it. Amelie is a favorite, as is Requiem for a Dream. This Movie is Not Yet Rated is amazing; Thank you for Smoking. Does Clue count as Indie? December Boys was cute. Pulp Fiction. Paris, Je T'aime. Delicatessen.

I think MirrorMask would be indie. That was really good, too. I'll call Marie Antoinette (the 2006 version) as indie, too, just because I loved it so much. Lost in Translation.

Among my favorite movies of all time: Repo! The Genetic Opera.

To be honest, I'm not sure exactly what counts as "indie," truly, but I hope these count!

Repo! is soo trippy, man! I watched a little of it. It was very intriguing. It's on Netflix, so I might have to finish watching

I also love Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, though that's more of an indie internet film.

Thanks for sharing!

If you're counting Dr. Horrible, I'm going to strongly suggest "The Guild"...WAY better

It's just a little song and dance to a 70s song called "Stuck In The Middle With You". It's magnificanet and is classic Tarantino. In that movie the meaning of Madonna's "Like A Virgin" is explained

Watch iiiiit!

UG! As soon as I saw you mentioned Rez Dogs, I thought, "OMG, she's going to say something about the ear scene!" Bwahahaahaa! YUCK! The attempted burning alive was equally as horrible.

My favorite line, "Why do you have to give us our names? I don't want to be Mr. Pink. Why can't we pick our own names?"

"Because, everybody wants to be Mr. Black and then, there's fighting."

Just like kids......with weapons, and gasoline......

Loved, loved, loved Dead Man! (Johnny Depp.... 'nuff said). I adore Indie films. Magnolia, I heart Huckabees, Lost in Translation, Garden State, Even Cowgirls Get The Blues, Broken Flowers. I could go on and on.

Pieces of April is really good. It stars Katie Holmes making Thanksgiving dinner for her family. Not sure if it's technically "indie" but it's one of those quirky gems that is on IFC from time to time.

So good! I have clouds floating above my desk and bed now. I also made the ship/branch thing (I forgot what it was called) in a different colour.

Also,
The Exploding Girl (ahhhh <3)
Birds of America (Don't let Matthew Perry scare you out of it!)
Helen (Such a good film about depression)
Manic (Possibly my favourite indie film EVER & who doesn't love psych wards and Joseph Gordon Levitt?)
The Headless Woman (In Spanish, but AMAZING)
The Boys and Girls Guide to Getting Down (at least I thinkkk this is indie. four people saw it, but it was HILARIOUS)
Waking Life
Flatlanders (Curious about string theory or theology? This is a great movie)

There's so many more that I can't remember right now.. I love indie flicks. They've got so much heart.

A Single Man was very good. We just rented it. My Man fell asleep (and went out for a cig everytime it looked like there might be a Gay love scene, peeking around the corner of the front door, like a little boy who wants to see something he's "not supposed to.") then he finally sat down and conked out. I loved it.

Juliana Moore did a fantastic job as the Hag. I (big puffy heart) Hags.
