Do you usually prefer the book or the movie?

Contributor: Rhazya Rhazya
I think readers usually say "the book was far better.' And people more focused on movies who read the book say the movie was better.

For me it honestly depends. I swing (ha) either way.

Just would like to have some people post which they liked better and why.

When I hear of a movie coming out that's based on a book, I actually try to see the movie first--otherwise, the book will often ruin the movie for me. Once I've read the book, that's THE correct story, in my mind! But I can see a movie, and later read the book, and still enjoy the book because it'll add far more detail and story elements.

A couple of movies/television series that have lived up to their books, in my opinion, have been the Lord of the Rings movie series, and the Game of Thrones series on HBO.

I'm visual so I usually love movies more, but the books are nice to read after or before.

I think it varies from franchise to franchise. Sometimes I've loved a book but hated the movie, other times it was the other way around. Once in a while I don't like either, or I like both equally.

I clicked that I like them both equally in lieu of an other option. It's more like I have an equal chance of liking either. I tend to like whichever version I was exposed to first more than the other.

They both can have qualities I like separately, but when I see a movie I like it to be as accurate to the source as possible.

While I read a lot on non-fiction books, fictional movies (like Star Trek or The Hobbit) are also an escape from reality!

It totally depends. I'm always happy to find a great adaption of a work, and that doesn't mean that they have to cram in every detail from the book. Sometimes movies can even improve a work!
I suppose overall, I lean toward the source material though ;o

The book usually.

I hate when they cast someone who I felt was totally and utterly useless as the various characters.

Take, for example, the Perks of Being a Wallflower. The book was perfection, and the movie was pretty good, but Emma Watson for Sam???? Dumbest casting ever on that one.

Usually the book...I'm able to get more from characters or places from a book. My imagination is pretty wild, so for a well written book, I can get a lot from it.

I always prefer the book if I read it first. If I see the movie first I tend not to finish the book because its different from what I expect after seeing the movie.
