If you haven't seen the movies, watch them. It's fantastic and very twisted. i was wondering if the Anime version was any better. Has anyone seen it?

The movies cant compare to the anime.
They disgrace L in the movies by making him do something so stupid as to sign his own name. Watch the anime. MUCH better trust me.

PS in the anime there are more characters. And its way longer and more..."intellectual" & intelligent.

the movies were good, but its such a short time to try and explain everything in the entire story (it started as a manga). it really doesn't do the characters justice.
the anime is much longer and therefore has more time to play out the power struggles between the two. I'd stop at halfway though. when Near and Mellow show up it just all goes downhill. my mate had a good rational for why that happened (the writer was trying to create a character that was smarter than he was and could therefore not explain how they discovered things)
of course if you want to get the purest form of the story go strait to the comic and read that.

The anime is AWESOME. I was not impressed with the films. I freaking LOVE the anime though. I was even going to name my son Light. lol My mom vetoed that. So instead, I go by Kira online.

Im to Eps. 8 right now and the diffrence is so night in day between the 2. I wish I never watched the movies now! Even though I like them, they hurt the story...a lot!

The anime beats the movies any day....but I'm still pissed about L dying at the hands of that manipulative egomaniac Light. =.=
(yes...it wasn't 'technically' him, but he tricked Rem into doing it so he's L's murderer in my mind)

one of the best animes and i think the movies did a decent (B-) job. while there is of course the unfortunate sexism, it is still a great story expertly told. to a point (no spoilers, but those who watched know there's a point where it goes downhill very fast).
On another note, I often wonder if they could make a movie of it here in america. I worry that the characters would be whitewashed (which makes no sense since light looks white. compare this pic of young steve jobs to light

link)
as does misa. they could get japanese actors to play the other parts and american actors to play light and misa and it would be fine.
I also worry they would dumb down the plot, fail to illustrate the battle between crime control and due process and move it to NYC to make it "identifiable."
Also, do those pictures prove that bill gates is L?
