Nice analogy! Also, very true re: all three bands ripping off other bands (but isn't that what ALL bands do... I mean Mates of State have made a career out of cover albums and The Bird and The Bee just put out an album entirely of Hall & Oates covers, which is killer, by the way). However, I think this is most obvious in the Beatles work, as their earliest albums were highly populated by cover songs.

No Zeppelin because almost every single one of their songs is a word for word note for note rip off of some artist or another. Very strange considering how talented they all were as musicians. The Stones and Beatles were guilty of this as well, but they are better known for their own music, and they attributed where they got their stuff from, unlike Zeppelin. As far as the Beatles and the Stones go, I think David Lee Roth put it best when he likened both bands to young boys and how they would keep their bedrooms. He pointed out that the Beatles would have neat and tidy rooms, whereas the Stones would have messy rooms. I thought this was a good way of looking at things, and since my room was a fucking disaster growing up, I am going with Mick and the boys.
