You can read the full write-up on io9, but it appears a plea deal has been reached for Ryan Matheson, who was arrested on child pornography charges after customs officials found — GASP! — anime and manga characters. You can read his personal statement or i09's summation. Io9 has also posted one of the pictures that started all the trouble, a moe style parody of Kama Sutra positions.

It's scary that officials waste there time prosecuting this nonsense when there are children out there in dire need of help.

I read that same story too on io9!

This is one of the reasons I never got into anime/manga. This particular culture difference can lead to jail time in the US.

It is disturbing in some cases how life like the anime characters are...and how young they look. However it is still a cartoon when all is said and sifted. If anime and manga could satisfy the urges of a sexual predator then it would, most likely be used as a therapeutic tool...afterall it ISN'T a real child being violated and most times the artist will assert that the characters are actually 18+ years old. It's another situation where if you don't like it don't do it, as least as far as I can see.
Still I agree with you JR it is something that is like straddling a live wire, you may never get hurt or you may be electrocuted severely.
For my part I don't see the attraction but my guys love the stuff. I guess we'll be making sure all manga and anime that might be on mine or my children's computers is gone before attempting a border crossing in the future.

I hear what you're saying, but the complete lack of common sense on the part of the customs officials drives me insane. The picture was clearly stylized and to jump to the conclusion of child pornography! was a stretch, even by prosecution-happy law enforcement standards. Disgusting.

OT: The fact that I typed "there" instead of "their" in the original post is going to drive me crazy. When do we get the EDIT POST feature!
