Do you call the persona that Bruce Wayne adopts to strike fear into criminals "Batman" or "The Batman"? Or do you think there are distinct instances where one would call him one or the other?
"Batman" or "The Batman"?

I definitely thing there are circumstances where someone would call him one or the other; someone familiar would directly address him as "Batman" while a stranger would call him "The Batman." For example, Superman or Robin would say, "Hay, Batman, we need to stop the Joker!" A stranger, like a civilian or criminal, would say either, "I live in The Batman's town," or "The Batman might be out tonight, so I shouldn't rob this bank." "The Batman" is a reference to the abstract idea to me.

I always just thought of him as Batman

Yes, this is what I was going to say. I think the "the" dehumanizes him and is used by people who are either afraid or don't want to fully accept his existence.
