Americans have an affinity for celebrating seemingly non-celebratory things for any given reason. Today is National Grilled Cheese Day and April is National Grilled Cheese Month.
See, even the squirrels dig it!
I like my grilled cheese with ham, in France this would be known as a "Croque Monsieur". Paper thin slices of fresh deli ham cooked to perfection with a slice of good old American cheese, toasted bread and a thin layer of mayo on each slice. It's so good for breakfast, lunch or dinner!
If I go the traditional route and just do the bread and cheese without ham, I like to dip it in ketchup.
National Grilled Cheese Day? That's pretty hilarious
I like my grilled cheese pretty simply, usually just bread and cheese, but I don't mind mixing the cheeses up or putting some fancy cheese in it, and sometimes I'll add a little bit extra (like tomatoes, or ham) to spice it up. But almost all the time I will eat it with a bowl of tomato soup, what a great pair!
Most of the time I dip my grilled cheese in apple sauce. Sometimes I have cream of mushroom soup with it. And sometimes I put bacon in it and just eat it alone like that.
My boyfriend likes to experiment with his but lately I think he's found one he likes. He puts hot sauce (we love the shriracha hot sauce) and onions in it.
Sometimes fresh tomato on it, but I hate the tomato cooked, so I would have to cook the grilled cheese, peel it open, put raw tomato on it and then eat it. I am just too lazy.

How do you like your grilled cheese sandwiches?

I like my Croque Monsieur made with extra mature English Cheddar, and with a side of tomato soup.

Hmm. Mind if I ask where abouts you're from (generally speaking, not exact locale)? I've never thought of such a combination with the mushroom soup or the applesauce. I like to drip green beans in apple sauce.

I'm so picky about cheddar cheese. I like it but only on certain things and a grilled cheese isn't one of them. I would like to try a combination of cheddar and some white cheeses one day, though. I think it would mellow out the bite a bit.
I loooove grilled cheese and tomato soup! Normally I end up using some kind of sexy cheese though, since american wigs me out. Munster or jack or even cheddar make some epic sandwiches.
