Thinking of starting a Youtube reviewing blog, but don't know how to handle toys. Help!

Contributor: Ryuson Ryuson
Hey there! My boyfriend gave me the idea that I should start a Youtube channel where I review things. I'd do a lot of beauty products and such, but I also was thinking that I could do Eden unboxing videos and review toys. Obviously I wouldn't post the video reviews I do for Eden, but things like that.

Now here's the problem: I want to either go into high school Education or herpetology, and especially for the former I don't know if I'd want to be attaching my face to sex toys, the same way I don't show my face on Eden. At the same time, my boyfriend doesn't think I'd have much success on YouTube UNLESS I show my face!

What do you guys think that I should do?

Show your face and review toys. Those jobs should be okay with you reviewing toys/screw them!

or review toys and do not show your face.

Review toys, don't show your face. I think that would be the best way to review toys.

I'm happy I found this. I was considering the same recently, and since I'm studying to be a Special Education teacher I was a little skeptical. I agree that doing reviews without showing your face is the best option. Maybe also come up with a new alias too so people can't associate it with you through Google. But maybe that's a little redundant.

Your videos are AMAZING by the way. I watched a few earlier. I think that alone will make you a good success on YT, with or without showing your face.

That's a tough one. I'd say if you're more interested in reviewing beauty products go ahead and show your face but you might want to leave the toys out.
But if you're more interested in doing toy videos then you might want to keep your face out of them.

Unlike here in our 18 and up anonymous community I wouldn't think you'd have to worry much, but youtube is pretty much open to the world, and you never know who might see it.
You could even make 2 channels and have one with your face and makeup and one anonymous talking about toys.

That's just my two cents! I'd say do what you're the most comfortable with. If you feel uneasy about it I would hold off doing it until you're sure you won't regret doing it.

Good luck with whatever you choose!

Your reviews are always great and informative - I don't think not showing your face would be an issue at all. You're already well-established here, so there's already a starter crowd that'd watch your videos!

I think it's perfectly reasonable not to show your face.

Wow, thanks everyone! I feel a lot better about this now. I might try and start doing videos this week (I want to do a few before I start posting) so I'll let you know. I'm glad that you guys don't think it's a must to show my face!

Honestly, I'd be more worried about my voice than my face. It's such a unique identifier, don't you think?

Hmm... Do you think that future employers would recognize my voice from YouTube reviews? I do have a fairly unique voice. Thanks for giving me that to consider! Youtube is such a more public place than Eden!

I love your videos here & I enjoy seeing as much of you as we do, but for your new circumstances, I'd be more careful of how much you show. I often see your face from the nose down as well as your hair & torso. Combined with your distinctive voice, as well as your rings, I have no doubt I could identify you, even if you were just an unfamiliar person who worked in my office.

If you keep the video shot tight & controlled, it would help. If you've ever seen Kindred's videos, that's the setup I'd go for. Don't worry about having to show your face, your personality & charm are well conveyed even in your writing, so I don't think it will hurt your reviews at all. I think everyone will agree with me that you're smart, as well as adorable & you'll do well on YouTube. Good luck!

Usually when I watch toy review videos I'm paying more attention to their hands. They gives me a GREAT indicator of to how big the toy is (better than measurements). I do think my voice AND face are very unique, tis why I don't do videos (plus the rings I wear on my hands is unique to me).

But do reviews just don't show your face.

There are plenty of famous YouTubers who don't show their face, in some cases that sense of mystery actually contributes to their success. Maybe try doing it anonymous for a while and if you feel it's holding you back you can always start showing your face, whereas you can't hide your face once it's been seen!

If you go into education, you should be sure to pay your union dues and the region that you live in has much more to do with the risks that you run. Assuming that not showing your face is likely to protect your identity is foolish in today's techno-savvy world.

What usually happens in a case where someone's outted to their boss for being kinky is not that the PTA was sitting around watching porn or youtube and they say "isn't that Johnny's teacher?" More often than not a former friend or confidante sends your pics or links or fetlife photos to Boss/church/whoever.

As long as what you are doing is legal and you use the appropriate 18 and over filters, it's kind crazy to worry you could risk losing a job you don't even yet have for holding a vibrator package next to your face. If you plan on going into politics or some activity in which the "Office" is famous and comes with media scrutiny then maybe... just maybe... you might end up a little embarrassed. But not likely to be inconvenienced.

And herpetology, well... sex sells. Sex sells snakes?

Also to add the note of I practice what I preach, I both teach children, write for children and write erotica for adults (obviously). I use my legal name for everything I do. It is frequently an issue that writers discuss. If you become famous, everything will be known. I start from the hide nothing and there's nothing to be uncovered. If I've missed out on opportunities because of this, no one has ever been brave enough to spell out "why" they didn't want me.
