I have a lot of trans friends, each of whom I love very dearly. I am of the opinion that transphobia, at least in part, results from just not being exposed to transgender people. I can't imagine anyone knowing any of my friends and not loving them!
How many transgender people do you know?

I agree, this is a great poll, and I know WELL over twenty. In the hundreds as far as who I talk to, associate with, call and text, etc., in person and face to face only around 3 dozen?
I run an online support group on facebook on two different pages, for transgendered people, and I attend meetings as well for them. I am not transgendered myself, but one of my closest friends who I actually once dated til she needed time to figure herself out is transgendered and that's what got me started!

I only know one, and I didn't meet him until I was 25. I'm amazed that I went that far without knowing at least one. Then again, who knows...maybe I knew others and just didn't *know* that I knew. Does that make sense? *L*

Off line I don't personally know one who identifies as trans gender. The closest is a drag queen who prefers to go by Vivianne then his given name but who identifies as cis .

I've only known one, both online and real life. I don't get to go out much, but around here, meeting transgenders is just not as common even though it's a more liberal area overall. I, personally, would love to meet more of them myself. An interesting poll.

Three to five off the top of my head, though I'm sure it wouldn't be hard for me to meet more!

I'm not sure exactly how to answer - there's only one person I would count as an actual close, personal friend who I talk to on a regular basis.
Other than that, I could name 20+ I've met / known briefly / used to know / et cetera.
Also, I think it's worth mentioning that people might actually know a trans*person without knowing it or directly realising it. Some trans*people aren't "out" or vocal about it. If a person can and is trying to "pass", you might never know they're "different" unless you see them naked (and sometimes not even then).
There's a local teacher who is trans* near me, and you wouldn't know if she kept it secret (she has a website and everything aimed at informing and helping others, so it is definitely not a secret).
There are lots of trans*people who prefer not to be "out" (or for whom it would be dangerous), just wanting to live normal lives. You might know them without actually knowing it.

I know quite a few transgendered people.

Where I live I don't know any, or at least don't know I do. I have met and worked with some, but beyond that don't know any closely. I never regarded them being any different from anyone else I knew except that they are way more self aware then most people I know.

I don't know any.

I knew2 girls that went to college with me that are now men

Not many at all, my partner is bi-gendered, though.

Three, and I'm a straight girl. My old apartment building was a gay mecca in the middle of a very ghetto area. I'm not sure how that happened but it was pretty cool

We have gay friends of both genders. We have no transgender friends and have never met a transgender person we know of...but if they really LOOK and ACT like members of the other gender then what they were "born as" anatomically, who would know?
