Are you bothered by the way sex toys are marketed based on gender?

Contributor: lexxxmoonchild lexxxmoonchild
Edenfanasys seems to be a little better at this than most sex shops I've seen as far as Trans issues goes, but there are still distinct gender sections (although there's a part of the site without them) and the descriptions of some products are very gender specific. How do you feel about this?

Also I realize me including cis people in the poll is problematic but I'm new and have no idea what type of community is here or the decorum yet so please bear with me! Sorry if I'm stepping on anyone's toes.

I largely ignore it, since the packaging is something I throw out anyway. It's a little annoying, but it's really an extension of society on a larger scale. I mean, how many forum threads are on here that say "MEN ONLY:" or "WOMEN ONLY:"? Brick-and-mortar sex shops are even worse. I'd love for things to be less gendered, but at the end of the day, a toy's gendered packaging doesn't really effect my feelings on wanting the toy or not.
All in all, it doesn't bother me too much.

Not particularly. Mostly because I'm not sure how else they would be marketed

This is how I feel: I don't feel bad that most of them are marketed to the gender most likely to use them. I do feel bad that there aren't any toys marketed as gender neutral at all. It would be nice to see a vibrator that comes in various bright colors other than pink and is just marketed as a vibrator, not as a "women's toy." I mean, if someone's going to buy a vibrator, they know where to put it. They can figure out pretty quickly from looking at a toy whether or not it will work for their particular anatomy.

I mean, to me, marketing sex toys to a specific gender is like marketing LEGO to boys and Barbies to girls. Nothing says that that's the way it has to be other than society, but because typically, parents buy gendered toys for their kids, it makes sense to market them that way. Does that mean that I would buy a kid a gendered toy? Not necessarily. But it's like marketing workout DVDs to people who are overweight or the shit that you see on late night TV to people who are completely incapable of functioning at a "normal" level. Advertising for the group that is the target population makes sense.

It only really bothers me when it's blatant. Like if it's "This clitoral stimulator is sure to drive her wild!" I'm not too upset, but if it's like "This plug is only for the manly man; only manly men can use such a masculine toy, because only manly men have prostates!" or something like that (I was a bit exaggerated) I would be a little upset.

While I would LOVE to live in a society that acknowledged that, while there may be two main sexes, there are an infinite number of gender identities... Western culture just doesn't seem to be fond of that idea. It would make things less 'easy,' but it would for sure make people feel more included. (It also would have made puberty a lot less confusing for me hahaha)

I just think they limit the market for a lot of toys when they put a gender on it, G-spot and Prostate toys are a huge example. I own all sorts of prostate toys for vaginal use.

Agreed. I love using certain hand vibrators for penile stimulation, but they are never really marketed that way.

I understand why it's done, since it would be strange and a little off-putting to people outside the trans* community if the categories were 'people with penises' or 'people with vaginas,' but it does still make me a little uncomfortable.

I don't really mind too much? Honestly, I find giving the sex toys genders themselves, like "All his 7 inches will please you" or something like that, generally much more annoying and weirder.

it does bother me. Why cant it just be sex toys? why specify gender? Let people get what they want with out restrictions

If anything it can really putoff some people, and it bothers me quite a bit. It'd be nice if it were just "Anal" "Vaginal" "Masturbatory" etc. I also find it weird that they have Gender Friendly under Couples even though it's directly marketed towards Trans* guys. Perhaps for they whole 'genderplay' kink but still, it doesn't seem right to me.

I'm not sure how I feel, I do agree with Carrot, but i see them just like sex toys...they have to be comercial, to me its just like clothes.

I'm trans and it doesn't bother me. Trans people make up such a tiny fraction of the population, so I understand why most places aren't bending over backwards to make things more all encompassing.

I hear you there! Personally, it only bugs me a little when I am looking for toys and have to go through multiple coplies of the same toy because they were listed by genders. Most sex toys are fine for all genders so splitting it up like this is silly. I wish more companies just sorted by sex toy type (ex: anal plugs, cock sheath, ect) and not gender to make it easier to find things we want.

I just wish vibrators came in more colors than just pink and purple! Gimme some neon green ones or something any day.

It's more silly to me than anything when they give genders to things like vibrators or dildos.

It doesn't really BOTHER me, but the 'girly' colors sure do! I would LOVE it if sex toys were marketed by hole/body part, but that's probably 'too vulgar'

I am trans and it doesn't bother me. Realistically, I know plenty of cisgender men shop in the women's section and plenty of cisgender females have tried out some of the things in the men's section.

Would it be better to have the sections labelled differently? Yes, of course I think that it would. But it's not upsetting to me. Just go ahead and type things in the search field..

I'm mostly cis gendered, and it doesn't really bother me. Though I prefer things to be gender friendly for those who don't identify the same way.

Otherwise in terms of me personally: I'm okay with pink, but it'd be cool if there were a little bit less "girls love pink right??". There's looots of pink toys. Also it would be cool if guy toys weren't made of such expensive yet non-durable and porous materials. I know it's harder to mimic girl parts since the material needs to be soft, but considering a lot of them need to be replaced often it's a bit annoying that they tend to be priced so high.
