Start off with the dildo. Get one that's made of silicone, has a smooth surface and a curve. I'd recommend playing with other toys until you're comfortable with a size of about 1.5" diameter x 6" long (or bigger).
Get a dildo with a flange for an O-ring harness as there are many more options. Tantus or Vixen are both very good - I recommend the Tantus Curve or a similarly sized Tantus/Vixen dildo for a first toy.
Once you get the dildo play with it for a while and make sure you still like the idea. If you do then get a decent harness. Sportsheets makes some decent but not too expensive harnesses. If you're pretty sure you'll do it a lot go ahead and spring for a nice one from Aslan or SpareParts.

Depending on the size you're into I'd recommend the Ultra skin cock. The material is great in a sense that the toy is firm enough but not too hard during penetration. Due to it's 2" size the pressure on the prostate is great and the sensations from stretching the sphincter are amazing. It's great for hard thrusting and rough pegging sessions too. A good toy to prepare for the Ultra skin cock is the inflatable Gapers organic plug.
The harness it's very individual and I guess your wife should read some reviews and decide for herself.
