These sorts of discussions are best had outside the bedroom. I would recommend bringing it up in a neutral way. "I was reading about this... Why do you think?" Once you know where he stands you can determine where to go from there.

My current partner was much more open minded, I was the one shy of the idea. We ended up discussing kinks and such, what we'd like to try. We started with a few fingers, but now we do full on pegging. We both love it.
The way I end up asking is by probing- I ask what they think of the idea, what their thoughts are. If they seem open, I ask more questions- what kind of situation, would the be willing to try it. It just goes by how they react.

I might emphasize that it is very important to use lots and lots of lube-you can't use too much. Also small diameter dildo is very important. Silicone dildos are the best since they are very easy to clean. Vibrating dildos are by far the best.

If you two like giving massages to each other, then that is the the perfect time to add just a little bit more lube to the anus area and just let your fingers "glide" over the opening.
