Alcohol is only more sociably acceptable because it is legal.
02/12/2012
Alcohol most definitely is, but it shouldn't be that way.
02/12/2012
Unfortunately, I think drinking is more acceptable because it is legal. I think that alcohol is much more harmful than marijuana.
02/12/2012
Also agree that alcohol is more acceptable as it's legal. It shouldn't be that way. I know a lot of asshole drunks. Not so many asshole stoners.
02/12/2012
Alcohol is considered more socially acceptable by most, but I do not consider either to be. It's all about self control and having things in moderation, not about the substance really. Marijuana is relatively safe when used in the right setting, as is alcohol, but again, moderation.
02/12/2012
I prefer alcohol over pot, I'm not a fan of smokers really. Can tolerate them, but not my favorite.

Drinking has been more socially acceptable for hundreds of years. It is also legal, however pot has a nasty rep as an illegal drug which makes smokers socially disadvantaged and frowned on. It does not mean it is right, I feel that alcohol probably destroys more lives than pot.

Drinking is STILL legal, street drugs are NOT (other then in LIMITED situations...almost all medical), so SOCIALLY there is no question, drinking is more "acceptable". Go buy a JOINT at your local pizza parlor or at the local art festival. Compare that to buying a BEER there!!! However, they are BOTH drugs and without getting preachy, they BOTH can be badly abused. Every night I hear about a DRUNK driver killing someone on our local stretch of freeway....drunk with LEGAL booze.

Probably drinking, but within my age group and quite a bit older, marijuana is widely accepted. In fact, I don't know too many people who don't smoke it besides my family and partner and myself. That's not to say we didn't at younger ages though, but it isn't something I care to do. I have kids to look out for and don't like sitting around tired and eating all day. Lol.

I figure that once the 60-90 year old crowd gets out of Washington, things will change, and marijuana will be leagalized. People who get drunk, tend to drive fast and crazy, and do stupid shit. People who get stoned, drive slow and cautious beacause they think they are driving too fast and crazy, and laugh at the people who are doing stupid shit. Ha! God bless the stoners.
03/03/2012
Drinking is more socially acceptable, as more people believe that it isn't too bad. People think that marijuana is like horrible.
03/04/2012
Drinking for sure. Smoking weed is pretty acceptable around here too though.

I was a bartender for years. I can't tell you how many times I wished that we could have given each customer a fatty when they walked through the door.
Some things to take into consideration:
No one recommends alcohol for cancer patients.
Drunk drivers kill thousands.
Not everyone who smokes is a stoner.
Not everyone who drinks is an alcoholic.
Everything in moderation.

Alcohol is more socially acceptable, marijuana isn't. And I agree with what babycakess said: "if pot were legal, it would take a LONG time for it to be truly socially acceptable." Definitely.

For some reason alcohol is, even though it is much more dangerous.
05/28/2012
alcohol is more acceptable
05/28/2012
I think the stereotype attached to marijuana is what makes it less socially acceptable rather than the drug itself. I know a lot of stoners that are vocal that they're stoners, which is awkward for me. Just do your drug of choice and settle down about it, don't broadcast it... But that isn't everyone, just those I talk to. A lot of people who drink also express that they're "sooo drunk" which is just as awkward. Alcohol is generally more socially acceptable because it helps people relax at parties and whatnot, so it's more acceptable to give someone something to swallow rather than inhale. Plus alcohol doesn't produce smoke that can intoxicate others or make them smell like weed, which is a plus.
05/30/2012
I dont think smoking pot is any worse than drinking, drug-wise, but I hate smokers in general... so yeah...
06/03/2012
I don't like alcohol so it's a pity that most people find that acceptable, but many do not find smoking acceptable mainly, as people pointed out, because it is illegal and they don't like the smell of smoke or being around smoke.
06/03/2012
Drinking is more socially accepted than marijuana me personal accept marijuana more than drinking. Especially when marijuana can be used medically which I'm totally for and am apart of groups locally that support and push for it to be legalized in my state. I can't wait until it is because I know it will help a lot of people out there including me.
06/05/2012
Drinking is more accepted.
06/05/2012
it's too bad that smoking pot isn't legal. compare the dangers of the 2, really it's a wonder the illegality doesn't belong to alcohol.

I would say that alcohol generally *is* more acceptable, but when you compare the effects the two have on people, weed quite clearly has fewer negative consequences for behavior.

It should definitely be the opposite though.

Drinking for three reasons:
1. It's legal.
2. Marijuana doesn't have to be smoked, but since it often is, it gets some of cigarette smokers bad image (being bad for your lungs, second hand smoke, etc).
3. Even if Marijuana becomes legal, it will take a long while before it becomes truly acceptable as it will the negative image from having been an illegal drug.

Ok. I drink 2 a year. I don't smoke marijuana. This is a long and touchy subject.
Marijuana should be sold at the gas station and taxed. Of course put a age of 21 years old to purchase and have strong laws against anyone under the age using.
Less people crash their cars and kill people while stoned. Then the police and law can focus on the more important drug problems out there.

09/09/2012
Alcohol is definitely more socially acceptable, but I really don't care for either. I have poor health, so drinking is definitely out of the question. I've grown up with stoners my whole life, and I really saw some of the negative changes it can do to people. Even though I can technically get medicinal marijuana, I really choose not to do it. I'm allergic to the smoke, and ingesting normal things is hard enough for me as is, so I am not willing to try and eat any marijuana foods at this time.
09/21/2012
The alcohol. But honestly they really should legalize weed (even if I'm allergic to it).
09/21/2012

09/21/2012
Drinking because it's legal, and you can sit on your porch and drink it IF you keep it in a cup and not be able to see the can or anything. That's what we gotta do here. Granted hubby and I hide behind the service truck to drink it XD. Well the cans anyways, we're only like, two steps from the porch.

Drinking is definately more socially acceptable. There are many places and social functions which revolve around the sale and/or consumption of booze. Bars are places (which are sometimes quite elaborate) where people go to socialize and drink. I didn't drink on my 21st birthday and many people tried to pressure me into doing so. Also, I don't know if you've ever tried to host a wedding without alcohol but if you ever do you should expect some party guests who are pissed off you are not providing them with the free booze they expected. If you help someone out and they want to thank you, they'll usually offer to buy you a drink.
If you were try to replace most of the alcohol with weed in these situations you'd likely be accused of breaking tradition (at best) or trying to get others in trouble (at worst).
Marijuana is less socially acceptable because it's often not legal. Even in places where you can get pot legally but alcohol is still the dominant socially accepted drug of choice. There are many social functions, places, rituals and rights of passage that many people cannot actually imagine doing without having a glass first.

Marijuana is more socially acceptable to me because the actions of someone high from Marijuana are not as extreme from drinking. Also, it takes a LOT more to get high enough to something as stupid as you would from getting drunk. Also, drinking is a lot more dangerous, because you could end up with alcohol poisoning. It's easy to stop smoking Marijuana when you've had enough, but not easy to stop drinking alcohol when you've had enough.

Well, which one is more likely to be legal and which one is more likely to be illegal? Obviously, the legal drug is more socially acceptable than the illegal one.

In several of the states theses days both are "legal". According to these states laws, Marijuana is legal to dispense for compassionate use and also in some places recreational use . Now the Fed's have a different perspective on the issue and might start to enforce their perspective if the regime changes in the next national election.

As a Police Officer I have this debate with a lot of people. I'm pro pot, my issue is with the testing of users for driving (standard field sobriety testing). Marijuana testing can tell us if you have smoked weed but not how long ago which becomes an issue when you are driving. I see a big problem with someone getting an Operating While Impaired for smoking weed yesterday. My other argument would be that I have dealt with multiple drunk idiots in my life but pot smokers have never caused me any issues, if they mess up they own up to it and are chill about the whole situation. I'm friends with a person that has done every drug you can think of and he said alcohol messes you up more than any of them. His quote was "yeah acid will make you think your face is falling off but at least I knew where I was!" PS: He loves weed. haha

marijuana is beneficial for many health problems. I smoke it occasionally at bedtime to reduce pain and help me sleep. I know friends who have smoked it while on chemo to reduce nausea and help them to be able to eat. All booze does is ruin your liver and make you act impulsively.
02/12/2012
at least mary jane doesnt eff up your liver...
02/12/2012
I need an "other" option. I really don't agree with smoking pot even if it may be less harmful to the body.
02/12/2012
Definitely marijuana
02/13/2012
Marijuana has more medicinal properties if ingested safely.
02/13/2012
Drinking isn't really bad for you in moderation. Red wine is good for your heart. But it can also kill your liver if you drink too much. Key phrase? Too much.
Marijuana, if smoked, will destroy your lungs, just like smoking, or inhaling any other smoke. If eaten and consumed in moderation, it's not that bad for you either though.
They can both be "good" for you and bad for you.

Yeah, I don't know why people don't get that by smoking (anything) you are doing terrible damage to your lungs. True cigarettes have more chemicals in the actual product, but at least (most) cigarettes are filtered. Not the case when smoking pot.

Not saying alcohol is better, but people seem to think marijuana can do no wrong. Which is silly.

Marijuana is definitely less harmful. Alcohol can and does cause severe problems with some people, wheras marijuana really doesn't. Obviously, pot can also HELP people with certain medical conditions.

For many people, NO alcohol is their best bet.
As for marijuana, I don't use it at all anymore, but there are other ways of ingesting it than harsh direct smoking. Water filtering, eating, etc are all much safer ways of ingesting this herb.

The only "safe" way to smoke pot is to use a vaporizer. You heat it up and release the oils. Otherwise making brownies is the way to go. Pot is a great pain reliever if used properly. The EU has a form of it in pill form used as a pain reliever. The only problem is that like most pain relievers people can over medicate.
Wine doesn't help the heart. Certain ingredients help you heart. You can get them just as easily from other sources.
I personally stay away from pot now because it's not worth ruining my record for. Like everything else moderation is the key. I will admit to using alcohol to help if i have back pain.

I would say that either of these are harmful, just in different ways and affect different areas of the body negatively. I would say that i know more people that can function better on marijuana than can sober. I have never met anyone tho, that can function better drunk than sober. So I guess drinking would be more harmful to OTHERS, if that makes sense? (ex. drinking/driving etc etc)

Nobody has ever died from smoking too much pot..... infact, you need over 1000 times the required "dose" to kill yourself.

i think when it comes down to it, alcohol has the potential to harm your body much more drastically and in a much shorter period of time.
considering the addictive properties of alcohol, it is more likely to be abused and thereby cause a more rapid deterioration of the body's internal organs.
i think that people who smoke marijuana, by and large smoke less frequently than a drinker would drink. and hey - it's not addictive!
also, consider the potential for immediate bodily harm. to my knowledge s**t like car crashes, fights, and rape tend to happen when people drink too much. (the worst that ever happens when i smoke too much is i fall asleep while watching comedy central and wake up 2 hours later with my hand inside a chip bag.)
everything in moderation, for sure, but alcohol will definitely hurt your body faster and to a much greater degree.

Marijuana is a medicine. I used to use it as just that--it eases the swings of my bipolar and relaxes my anxiety. I haven't used it recently because it makes me cough too much, but it's beneficial and drinking does nothing of the sort for me...

I think more testing needs to be done. I think Marijuana is safer, but until we fully study it's effects over long usage, we will not know for sure. Just like alochol and cocaine, the more we study it, the more we know about the dangers (if any).
07/20/2014
There are associated specific physiochemical risks with marijuana.
Some people can have a bad reaction instantly. Where as with drinking such risks are infinitesimally smaller.

Tough call! I'd have to look at the amount consumed and intensity of both and compare the two. How one accomplishes this, I'm not sure.

Nope. I drink if and only if I'm in the mood to. If I don't feel like it, everyone else can drink and I'll just sit there annoyed with their drunkenness. I don't like being high as it makes me hallucinate and get jittery, so I pass on that as well. I don't mind being around high people as much though.
02/12/2012
I do not ever feel more inclined to drink or smoke around friends. I do not smoke any longer, but I do drink a beer from time to time and it's usually on my own.

I do not/can not smoke - I am deathly allergic. I drink occasionally when I want to. I outgrew peer pressure in my early thirties.
02/13/2012
I think peer pressure isn't the word for this. Yeah, I'm much more likely to drink around friends, but that's because my friends are fun, awesome people and I would never want to drink alone, not because they pressured me into it.
02/13/2012

I don't drink, I never have. When I was younger I smoked some weed. I have no desire to now. I found that there was always a lot more "peer pressure" to drink than to smoke.
Pot heads are like, "Hey, man, wanna blow a doob?" "No thanks." "Kewl. Party on!" No pressure at all.
When you don't drink people are always trying to get you to drink. People used to always tell me, "I can make you a drink so you can't taste the alcohol." I'd ask why would they want to do that. I could really taste 2 drops of alcohol in a gallon of orange juice. And, I don't like booze. Sometimes I'll carry around a glass of ginger ale with some olives on a stick inside it at weddings and parties and places like that. But, usually I just drink water.

08/14/2013
I don't feed into peer pressure. I enjoy being the sober one at parties.
I think alcohol and marijuana are both bad, though. Claiming that marijuana should be legal because alcohol is is stupid; I feel like the opposite argument holds more truth. I get that people like to claim that weed isn't as bad, but it's crazy how much the "sober" personalities of some of my friends that started smoking weed changed after even a couple times. On the other hand, the sober personalities of my friends remain unchanged after alcohol, though sometimes I stop liking them after learning they're obnoxious drunks haha.
But personally, I love being the sober person who remembers all the crazy things that happened, so peer pressure to drink doesn't affect me.

By "kind of" I mean that if other people are getting wasted, it's no fun to be the only sober person around and I'll join in, to an extent.

If I'm offered something that I would have done anyway, I'll take it. If I wouldn't have done it on my own without people around, I won't.
02/12/2012
If I'm offered something and I want it, I will purchase it myself and see it made in front of me. I will not simply accept a drink from someone that was handed to me other than at an extremely safe party where I know everyone there.

Yes. Obviously when I was much younger and partied, (20years ago). However, my hubby and I went on a guided fishing trip a couple of years ago, we won it, and all they brought was beer. We absolutely did not want to drink, however we ended up getting thirsty about half way through the day.
02/13/2012
Yes. I don't think there's anything wrong with this either... people keep saying, "when they were younger" like they need an excuse. If I go over a friend's house and she offers me a drink, if I want one and I don't feel pressured, there's absolutely no reason why I wouldn't take it.

Nope, I'm around it sometimes, don't feel pressured, and don't join in for either pot or drinking.
02/25/2012
No pressure, and I still say no.
02/25/2012
I said yes to drugs for many years. I would still say yes to pot, except now that I have a cool job I get randomly tested.
03/03/2012
good questions.
03/11/2012
I don't have a problem with pot but I think sometimes people let it control their lives way too much. I feel the same about alcohol. Its okay to do it, but don't let it run your life because then you will not be the best person you can be!
03/11/2012
I'm one that no matter what the others do, if I don't want to do something I wont.
03/19/2012
i won't accept drugs from people. it's just not my thing. alcohol? sure, sometimes, but i never get shitfaced. i have much more fun while sober. and watching other people being drunk and high is more fun when you're not!

Cigarettes, beer, marijuana. I'm done with doing those things for fun or to forget about how shitty life is. My life is great without those things.
04/06/2012
Marijuana still has carcinogens, though. They're both harmful.

i think pot is better for people than drinking...most drunks seem to be angry and want to fight were most potheads i see what to just chill...again most not all and this is from my experience personally

Around this area, if you arent doing what the crowd does then you dont fit in. Fortunately for me, I dont give a damn if they life me or the choices I make. I didnt want to be in the "in crowd" anyway
05/12/2012
I go either way. I can say no and not feel pressured, but then I feel like I'm missing out so I do it. Sometimes I just say no though.
05/20/2012
Sure, just to see what the hype was all about.
05/28/2012
As a teenager yeah i did, but not as an adult, if I dont fit in with them then its not the right crowd for me so i move on
05/28/2012
I never did anything like that just to fit in, if I didn't want to do that it was my choice and they should respect that.
06/05/2012
My motto used to be: don't knock it til you try it. You'd hand it, I'd take it. Fortunately that never ended badly, but it easily could have... Thankfully I'm done with the part of my life where I did that all the time. My liver and my brain cells are much happier
06/08/2012
I don't have any problem with either. As long as they're not done excessively, then I don't mind.
07/02/2012
I don't care for booze, I might have some on occasion say 1-2 times a year. Pot is something I don't have any issues with.
07/05/2012
I personally prefer alcohol.
07/09/2012
Thats stuff I did as a teen
07/09/2012
none of my friends drink or smoke, so there isn't any peer pressure
07/10/2012
Cast parties, my friend, cast parties.
07/10/2012
my friends drink and smoke at parties

causal drinker 2x year. No drugs.

Where I live, pot is very socially acceptable, it's assumed that everyone does it. Even my parents smoke. Either medicinally or recreationally or therapeutically, probably 95% of the people I know do pot in some form.
Drinking however, I actually know fewer who drink! I drink rarely at social gatherings, I try not to do it often for the health concerns, and I don't especially care for the drunk feeling unless I'm REALLY in the mood for it and I have a social outlet. Pot I'm comfortable doing any time.

I actually make an effort OT to surround myself with people who drink OR smoke pot, largely because I just don't like it. I really feel like if you "need" a mind-altering substance to "have fun" then what you really need is some counseling. I don't understand the desire to be out of control of yourself at all nor do I understand why it's appealing to get so drunk/high that you can't remember anything you did the night before. What good does it do you if you don't remember?
That's not to say that I don't think people should not be able to drink (I'm not sure if my views on pot are the same), but I don't want to be around drunk people myself. I don't mind a sip here and there if it tastes good, but otherwise I'm out!

I really like to see the results and posts regarding questions like these. Everyone has really interesting stories. Personally, I've never smoked. I've never felt the need to drink or smoke around friends or at parties, either. Sometimes if someone has a particularly tasty looking drink, I'll have a sip, but I don't really feel pressured.
11/26/2012
No, I never have.
11/28/2012
Yup, hookah. Just to try it once.
11/28/2012
I never feel pressure to do anything other than what I feel like doing at parties...because I'm not in high school anymore, and neither are my friends.
12/08/2012
Yes but not any more
12/23/2012
yes, I've drank to join the fun but knew I didn't have to.

As harmful as I know alcohol is, I continue to consume it -____-
I have to say though, it really does work miracles in certain social situations.

I've been strong-willed and independent from a very young age. I tried alcohol, pot and cigarettes because I wanted to, not because anyone pressured me. I had the chance to try ecstasy and cocaine and flat out refused, despite some attempted pressure. I kind of wish I'd tried ecstasy, but I'm even more convinced now than I was then that cocaine is a rotten, life-stealing trap.
I still drink a little, like a glass of good wine to enjoy with some good food, or a good beer or two (or a good single malt scotch) to enjoy with friends. The key word is ENJOY. I'm lucky that I never want more than one or two drinks and that I can take it or leave it. I feel the same way about marijuana. When it becomes legal here, I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy some good weed now and then.

At parties, if the mood strikes me, hell yeah.
02/25/2013
Not a drinker or smoker, also not pressured into doing any of those any time soon.
03/07/2013
Sometimes if they pass a joint to me I may take a drag off of it, or the wine bottle I'll take a sip (I'm normally the one they beg to kill it ._. really?). But when I say no, I mean no.

I'm a social drinker and by that I mean I'll have a drink or two the whole night. I'm not the kind of guy that will kill a 6 pack over the weekend or even in a night. Outside of a party or other social gathering, I don't touch the stuff.

I don't usually drink either, and when I do it's only usually a glass or two. Then again, I don't drink much of anything - even my water consumption is below the recommended amount.
