I'm sure there is no merit to it but i have a friend who swears during sex you can't get a chick pregnant if shes on top because gravity simply works against you. I'd like some opinions about this...

Bullshit.
03/19/2011
WOW. Nope. You can get pregnant in any position even if you are standing up.
03/19/2011
Um, no. Very much no.
03/19/2011
That seems like a sure way to have an unplanned pregnancy.

Too bad sperm have tails, can swim, and overcome the effects of gravity. Not to mention, it only takes one out of millions. Never underestimate nature's drive to carry on the species. Get your friend to a gyno or planned parenthood if she won't believe you.

I think your friend needs to educate herself on the workings of the human reproductive system.

Sperm swims, so a girl can get pregnant in any position. However, I have heard that people who want male babies have a better chance of getting one if the girl is upright because male sperm is stronger. Not sure if there's really any merit to that one though.

Good luck with that one. You could always name the child "Anti-Gravity".

The ignorance of people never ceases to amaze me....

FACT: You can get pregnant if you have sex standing on your head, laying on your back, sitting up, bending over backwards, in the bathtub, in a pool, in a jacuzzi, in the ocean...you can even get pregnant if ejaculate is on the outside of the vagina and isn't thoroughly washed off (though, it is rare).
I really hope your friend is using birth control. (Insert joke about never breeding here.)

Gravity has an effect, but not a significant enough one. Sperm are light, they're strong swimmers, and the surface tension of the moisture inside the vagina helps them.

The vagina not only can propel sperm towards the cervix, even if you are standing or sitting up, but there is a reservoir in your vagina for sperm to pool in, which is then moved towards the cervix.
I've gotten pregnant while on top.

He: Almost true! You have to spin her in circles to utilize the additional force to be 100% sure.
She: What he said. I married a genius.

I'm pretty sure the only difference between male and female sperm is the presence or absence of a Y chromosome. Otherwise, they're identical.

No, not really. Sperm with a Y chromosome swim faster, are stronger, but die sooner. Sperm with an X chromosome swim more slowly, are not quite as strong (in a battle of breaking through the egg first) but live longer in the woman's reproductive track and in vitro.
