What is your definition of sex?

I've noticed that on Eden, a lot of people only refer to penis/vagina penetration as sex. To me, sex is lots of things. I think that masturbating, cyber, oral, etc. all count as sex. How do YOU define it?

Useful topic breakdown on Penetration:

Men: during anal play do you like penetration?
my husband likes anal play but i have never tried penetration..curious if i should try it.

What percent of your love making sessions involve anal penetration?
When you have sex, what percent of the time do you find you or your partner have anal penetration as part of your sex play? Not just a touch, feel or.

Ever had DP? How?
Girls, have you ever tried double penetration? how did you do it/like it the most?

Assume 30 minutes is the ideal love making session how much time should be spent on oral pleasuring.
I'm just curious because my current partner likes oral up to the point of almost orgasming and then wants penetration to take her to orgasm. Which...

How can I get my girlfriend use to...?
My gf is a goldstar lesbian. We have been together for 10months and had plenty of penetration. But, no matter what strap we use or lube she just can..

I think all types of sex are really important and do not need to include genitals touching, or penetration to be considered sex. Neither is one kind of sex more important than another kind or sex or more legitimate. I believe that in a partnership if the persons believe what they are doing is sex, then it's sex and should not be held on a scale to anyone outside's definition of sex.

I consider oral and penetration to be sex. I don't consider phone sex, cybering or fingering to be sex. This is just for me personally. I agree with snarknemesis. Sex is whatever a person considers to be sex.

Sex, in my opinion, is vaginal intercourse, oral, or anal. Phone sex, cyber sex, masturbating, and fingering, aren't sex in my book -- but to each their own.

i like the second last definition 'two people acting on sexual feelings'

it doesn't have to be penetrative, and it doesn't have to be to orgasm.

Well, I would have to agree with the second to last option, but I'd define "real sex" as I see it as any physical activities motivated by sexual feelings. For instance, I've had cyber sex before, and I still think of myself as a virgin...

I feel like if people want to call their cybering their sex life; that is their business. That might be the only way they can have sex. So, who am I to tell them they aren't? Sex is anything you consider it to be. Though, people who consider it to be only PIV or PIA; should realize they are leaving out lesbian couples. These ladies can only have oral sex and mutual masturbation with hands or toys. And we all know they have sex, so sex can't be PIV or PIA. It has to include oral.

I'm gay, and I know lots of other gay women who have had very fulfilling sex lives with other women. If sex only includes penises, I guess my lesbian friends must all be virgins!

I guess it's only "real" sex when straight people do it, and for everyone else it's pretend.

I think what constitutes sex can largely depend on your mental state at the time. You can have sex with someone that only involves oral sex or mutual masturbation, and it can still very definitely be sex, or you can get a handjob or a blowjob from someone and it can just be a handjob, or just be a blowjob.

I never noticed this....especially. here on EF where all kinds of sex and relationships are discussed...many of which have nothing to do with a penis or vagina.

So if your boyfriend, girlfriend, spouse...whatever, were having phone sex, or cyber sex with another person, without your knowledge or approval, it would be the same to you as if they were checking out a Youtube video? NO "sex" issue involved? Honestly wondering how you would compartmentalize that difference.

SO....again, your SO, without your knowledge or approval, gets a "blowjob and hand job" from someone at a work party, for instance. There were a few drinks...folks were loose, but you KNOW this was not a long term relationship or interest. In your mind, your partner has NOT had sex???? Or they have not cheated (sexually)???

That is pretty much how I feel too. Even a kiss CAN be sexual. Sorry...if my hubby had another girls tongue down his throat, in a passionate embrace, that would be the same, in my brain, as his penis in her. Sorry...even a kiss can "cross the line".

Sex is anything you consider it to be regardless of how it is interpreted by others. Some may consider sexting to be just part of foreplay and then others may consider that sexual.

Well, that's why it bothers me so much. Eden is such an accepting place when it come to sexual preferences, kinks, fetishes, etc. but when it comes down to it, it seems like most people have a very heteronormative view of sex. Like I'll see people talk about foreplay like it's not sex at all, like "he fingered me before we had sex" and I'm like okay, what you consider foreplay is real sex to many queer couples. I feel like queer sex is often delegitimized on Eden. These are the thoughts that led me to create this poll and discussion.

I have a pretty wide-ranging definition of sex, being genderqueer means there isn't really a socially standard image of how people of my gender have sex, so I just enjoy it all and consider a wide range of interactions to be relevant parts of my sex life and sexuality.

It really depends on the experience... sometimes it's sex, sometimes it's play, sometime's it's not really anything.

Depends on what it means to you. The first time my boyfriend and I had webcam sex, I was hiding under a blanket, and we didn't talk that much. But that night we both felt all the excitement, emotion, and love we get from intercourse now.
