What do you think of Cosmopolitan magazine?

Contributor: novanilla novanilla
Personally, I hate Cosmo. I think it's really sexist, privileges male pleasure over female pleasure, has very stupid ideas about how to "solve" relationship problems, and even treats men like idiots driven by egos who can't handle the truth. I read one article in it that suggested that instead of just telling your male partner you want to do something different, because it could crush his ego, tell him about a dream you had that might hint that you want something. WHAT? Just communicate!! This kind of stupid advice drives me nuts and will never help heterosexual women having trouble orgasming or who are bored with their sex lives. And unfortunately, that's a pretty serious reality even in 2013. I know many women who say they are satisfied with only having an orgasm every few times they have sex, or even not at all, which to me is terrible (makes me wanna show them good sex ).

I've heard complaints about how it isn't queer friendly, which I get because I'm queer, but I feel like having a magazine that addresses hetero and queer women's needs would be a little complicated and it's better that queer women just have our own magazines.

What do you guys think of Cosmo? Or even other sex magazines targeted at hetero women?

It is what it is, it clearly has an audience. It used to be a guilty pleasure of mine but I can't recall the last time I had a chance or the want to read any magazine.

Even when I did read it, I laughed at most of the content but I realized they were pandering to women I didn't identify with any way. I guess it's all in what you allow yourself to believe?

I can't relate to anything in it - I'm simply way too different from their target demographic. I got more out of Mode. (Anyone remember that one?? That was the shiznit! Why oh why was that cancelled??) Although I did come across a Cosmo from 1983 a few years ago, and it had a very interesting women's lib slant in all its articles.

Ah, what I'd give for Cosmo to stop rehashing terrible sex advice. (I distinctly remember one of their manuals pretty much insisting to treat the vagina like a damn blender and stuff fruit in it. And use a penis for a temper. Swear to god.)

But yeah, don't care for it as a queer person.

I have always hated that trashcan magazine...

I always opted for reading material such as science magazines and text books, so I don't know...maybe I am not hip.

I read it a few times and wasn't too impress with it. I liked the idea of the magazine, though not what they had actually written.

Hate it with a fiery passion. In fact, once I was reading a better sex book and thought, "Wow, this is TERRIBLE. It's like something you'd read in Cosmo!" Turns out the author also wrote for Cosmo.

It's pretty terrible, but not much worse than most magazines of that genre.

I like it just so I can read about all the ridiculous sex acts they suggests. One of my favorite suggestions of theirs was to have sex in the kitchen and spank your man with a chilled spatula. Seriously? I love reading about crazy stuff I would never do.

Sometimes I flip through it if I'm at the nail salon. That's generally because I've forgotten how much I hate it.
It never fails to make me angry about something.

The only thing good about it is that it's provided lots of fodder for hilarious blog entries over the years!

I really only read it for the Guy/Girl Confessions. When I was 10-13 it was like soft porn, with the book teaser in the back. I'd read it for the tips on giving blow jobs and making out. It was the sex talk I never really had when I was trying to figure out the pleasure aspect.
