Best mood lighting I ever came across was Mulder's red lava lamp - it's not as silly as you think. The level of brightness is perfect, especially in red.

I also recently discovered multi-colored Christmas lights are good, too.

I usually just leave the regular light on. I definitely couldn't have sex with lit candles. I have huge anxiety about them starting a fire. I have had sex with a red light on and that was very fun.
