Okay, I actually say both? Though I do believe it's butt naked. Why I’m not exactly sure I mean if you weren’t wearing a shirt you would be topless, I guess if you aren’t wearing bottoms it's butt naked? I have no idea I’m just guessing; ask the Google gods they know everything.

Captain Peacock: 'Come along. We had to strip off in the barracks all the time.'
Mr. Lucas: 'I guess that's where the expression came from - 'barrack' naked.'

I prefer 'bare-ass naked', myself.

I vote for buck naked, derived from the animal skin clothing early settlers wore, which were the same shade as their skin, hence giving them the appearance of being naked.

Buck naked is how I've always thought of the phrase, but never really had a reason why. Carrie Ann's sounds plausible, so I'll go with that one. lol

Grew up hearing "buck naked". I personally just say "naked".

I always heard it as "buck naked", though I've never used either term.

I love etymology, so I had to Google it. The best write-up I found is in the Language Log.

Both are right, methinks.

I think to properly determine which one to use, it depends on context and verbiage.

1. He was standing there butt naked
2. We were running through the streets buck naked when the Red Wings came from behind to win the Stanley Cup.
3. That deer is buck naked.

While writing this I couldn't help but put in the word "ass". Buck ass and Butt ass.

I always heard Buck-ass naked or buck naked. I prefer bare assed naked myself. My girls started saying butt naked but it was because my oldest had a mild hearing problem when she was learning to speak and thought we were saying butt instead of buck. That and she liked saying butt at the time

I think buck was the original term because of an animal skin or something. However, to me "butt naked" sounds sexier... perhaps it's because I'm an ass man.

I've heard buck naked several times. but I atribute that to growing up in a small town of red necks. I'll cast my vote with butt naked because I've never seen a deer wearing clothes before.

BTW a buck is a male deer the females are called does.
