I just read a VERY good review on a vibe made by Emotional Bliss, and the company (not the reviewer) claims that "drinking and smoking can contribute to nerve damage" which, I assume requires the use of their products.
I have to at least disagree on the grounds that there is really NO evidence based data to support this. (Again, the review was VERY good, and the reviewer did NOT make the claim as her own.) Although, smoking tobacco and overuse of alcohol is not good for people, there is little evidence that it causes "nerve damage" to the genitals. Some circumstantial evidence seems to point to long term (decades) of use of these drugs to Erectile Dysfunction in some men. But, it is not conclusive. MANY conditions, most of them not under control of the person, can cause ED.
A lot of older women have a natural desensitization of the clitoris due to age, and declining hormone levels during perimeonpause and after menopause. I don't know if there is real research that points to either "drinking" or smoking as a cause.
My Orgasmic Threshold has increased like crazy. I used to have easy, immediate, no fuss Hair Trigger orgasms, now I need Hitachi-Wahl power to get anywhere. I have, however, never drank alcohol or smoked. Mine, as well as other women's orgasmic problems are due to hormone problems.
As Sex Toys are not reviewed by the FDA for their claims, I just hope that this idea "if you have trouble reaching orgasm, it's due to something YOU did to yourself" doesn't become widespread.
As women, we have enough to deal with.
Thoughts, comments, references?
Again, this was NOT anything the actual reviewer said, (the review was GREAT!) I need to reiterate that. The company made the claim and I am simply doubting their "this plus this, equals this, and our product will fix it." way of looking at a common, yet often misunderstood, and multi causal problem.
