I'd say my wife's experience mirrors yours. She was very timid with the paddles for a long time - but I now carry the bruises to prove she's gotten over her reluctance. She's also become enamored with the Wartenberg wheel (and so have I).

I love the collar and leash, but I haven't yet gotten her to embrace the concept fully - but we're working on it!

I'm not sexually active with others in the BDSM community near me, but just from talking with friends and co-workers, everyone I meet who I talk to about anything sex related is a sub/bottom. Every. Single. One. And I'm not shy with talking about it, either. There is only one person I can think of at my work who said he was more dominant once.

I think that being a switch is most common in BDSM. I follow a sex worker on Instagram who gives a really good look into their own life and roles. I think that people can be a switch (top and bottom), but only interested in sub roles, or Dom roles. To me, there's a big difference between being a top and a Dom, and a bottom and a sub. Tops and bottoms want to do things without power exchange, while Doms and subs include some sort of power exchange in their play, relationships, etc. I identify as a sub but there are some kinks and fetishes that I would love to be the top in, but have no interest in being a Dom.

So, a very long story and explanation short, switches are most common (to me, at least, with the overlapping of sub/bottom and Dom/top).
