Work up to it. Start with finger play or handheld toy play, and make sure you figure out what type of stimulation works best.
When and if you're both ready go shopping together for a harness and dildo. Look for one that's about 1.25-1.5" in diameter minimum and at least 5.5" long so it doesn't pop out or get too floppy.

I would also like to add, when considering a harness look for one that you feel will allow you to be stimulated also. This really adds to the experiance. I have the bare as you dare and a leather one. the bare as you dare is my favorite by far. Simple because of the middle strap.
When actually trying, we started with him proped up in doggie positon on a few pillows. It was much easier. Also, a curved dildo should always be pointed twords his navel.
the only other thing I can think of that would have helped us to know when starting out is make sure to reapply lube after a bit. this seems to help my Hubby feel more relaxed. Also, although I wanted to, Hubby said going slow and easy rather than thrusting at first felt a lot better.

Doggie or bent over the edge of the bed/furniture makes it easy to see the anus and get your dildo inserted, but I'll echo Mrs. Bignuf's comment that classical doggie just isn't that comfortable for me. I have no idea why, but the penis is not a good indicator of pleasure for pegging, and if you stop to try and make sure he's hard it just breaks up the fun (and it can get in the way of a "handsfree" orgasm if he can get them).
While it's not strictly accurate, I hear once "don't pay attention to the penis because his pleasure and attention are elsewhere".
