New Feature: Send as Gift

Contributor: Gary Gary
Hello everyone!

I'd like to introduce a new site feature today: Send as a Gift

You may have seen it on product pages under the Add to Cart button.

Send as a Gift works just like it sounds! Click on the Send as a Gift link to send a product to someone through our Gift Registry feature. When you click the link on a product's page, you'll see a popup box with all of the people who have the product on a publicly available Gift Registry. When you select a recipient and click Continue, the product is added to your cart. When you click Checkout, you'll go through the Gift Registry checkout screens. They look a little different from the standard cart, but they work the same.

In the dialog box, you can click on the name of a person's Gift Registry to view other items they would like to have.

Currently, this feature is only available on the new product pages.

We hope you enjoy this new feature. If you have any questions or comments, please let us know!

Awesomeness! Good job everyone! I was wondering how you guys were going to deal with the request to be able to send items to people who don't have their public wishlist on their profile.

This is a great feature. And fyi to everyone, you don't have to post the URL anymore, but your list does have to be made public AND the gift registry activated for your name to appear as a potential gift recipient.

I can see that an item is on other people's gift registries although they haven't given me the public URL to their own wishlists. That strikes me as an invasion of privacy. I don't want any random EF user to know what items are on my own gift registries.

You won't have any random user knowing what's on your own gift registries unless you not only make the list public, but also activate your gift registry. I tested it earlier with items that I had on a public wishlist and I didn't show up on that product's options for selection, but once I activated the wish list I did. It's a two step process in total, and just making it public doesn't let anybody you don't give that URL to to see what you've got on that list.

What a cool feature! And any wishlists you have that are public, you can make them private again if you don't want them to show - for privacy reasons. That's a nice option to have.

Hahaha, that was my thinking too. Everything I've looked at so far I've gone "I wonder who else wants this..." lol

I believe so, since you're making the purchase that sends the item to somebody else you should be able to make the purchase the same way you would if you were buying something for yourself.

That's awesome! Although now I'm going to be perpetually tempted to send random gifts to strangers...

It's certainly an incentive to add tons more things to my meager public wishlist.

So, if I don't want random users to know what's on my gift registry, how do I show the registry's wishlist to someone without it being public?
