Looking for some review-writing help!

Contributor: Backseat Boohoo Backseat Boohoo
I recently wrote a review that received less-than-stellar ratings ( link ), and I'm really curious as to what made it "not useful at all." That's not to sound snotty; I really do want to know what is making all of my reviews bite the big one, so that I can write better reviews next time.

Ideas? Suggestions?

If you're talking about the leopard print massager (your link is broken) the review seems fine. I wouldn't stress about it too much.

Once, I wrote a review that got something like five 'extremely useful' votes and one 'not useful at all' vote, where the voting party seemed to believe they were voting on the actual toy itself. It was really odd. They commented 3 times saying that I could have spent my money better (I couldn't have... it was a verified, description project review and therefor it was free) and criticized the product while making no mention of the review itself. I eventually had to shrug it off, but it still makes me scratch my head.

I think it's written rather well and you covered everything in detail.

Hmm.. it looks fine.. maybe because the second line says your grandma is going to die and that's not what readers want to read when they're looking for a toy to fuck themselves with? I'm grasping at straws here...

Looks pretty good to me too. I don't know who did that to you maybe they disagreed with you and really liked that particular toy. I think that people used to rate reviews poorly quite a bit for no apparent reason, and although it doesn't seem like it happens as much as it used to, it still seems to happen sometimes. Sorry to hear about your grandma and that some one was a jerk about your review.

Don't worry about it, friend. You got enough good votes for it to be "useful." I had no problems with it. Meh...

Don't worry about it at all, your reviews have been good. My reviews always get at least one very poor rating, no matter how much detail or how well written they are. In my case though, I know someone has a target on my back because it happens almost immediately after my reviews are published and it happens on over 90% of my reviews.

Your link works fine for me, and I'd missed this review before so it was nice to go back and read it There are always going to be people who rate unfairly or who don't even understand that the rating is supposed to reflect the usefulness of the review. I've noticed the weird ratings on quite a few really good reviews, so know that it has nothing to do with your writing.

I also wanted to give my sympathy, and if orgasms help you cope, then go for it

I agree with other comments... those random ratings that don't fit into the general trend of feedback are not worth worrying about. There was a recent suggestion about making a comment necessary to leave a lower rating, which I think is a good idea for helpful critique, and might also make people think about why they're rating a review low before doing it.

See now, that's what I want! If I make a mistake in my review--if I leave out things that you think should be in there--I want to know what those mistakes were so I can fix them. I know it's normal to get poor ratings, I just want to be the best damn reviewer I can be.
