Eden Gives Back

Contributor: Jul!a Jul!a
A while back we did the did a community outreach thing where we had members of the community adopt families for holidays. We've been discussing turning it into a club, that would essentially be run by the community, for the community, and would focus on giving back in a broader sense, meaning that it doesn't have to be limited to sponsoring a family or something like that. It could be planting a tree, or anything else that would involve giving back to your community in some way.

What are your thoughts on that as a whole? What are your ideas for how people can donate to a cause without it having to involve Eden Points each time?

This is a wonderful Idea! I actively volunteer my time to my local Animal Rescue League. It's very fulfilling and I get to play with awesome furry creatures on a daily basis I tend to preach to as many people as possible about the benefits of volunteering at their local SPCA sooo... PREACH PREACH

There's so many different avenues to take with charities. I just wrote a song to be on a charity album and where it didn't cost me anything all the monies raised will go to Save the Children. There's many ways to support bills or movements to protect wildlife, habitats, trees, Mother Earth and they only require support and a voice not funds. Just need to get a feel for what people are up too and go from there.

I help support foster kids programs and the House of Ruth often with funds but I also worked with the orphaned wildlife group local to me (haven't done anything lately cuz we had grandma move in for a bit) but not many people know what to do when a baby fox or injured red tail hawk shows up on their doorstep. Doesn't cost me anything to take them in til they can be released. Well not money but it does cost in time - you'd be surprised how often a baby bird eats The reward is seeing my baby fly around the house visiting-course she's been a problematic lil hawk trying to take my kittens and now eyeballing my chickens lol but that just means she's healthy.

There are so many in need for so many different reasons. Just gotta pick something that interests the majority.

Personally, I would love if Eden did something for Autism Awareness. It affects so many peoples lives - my son being one of them. So its a cause that i hold close.

Volunteering your time or even sponsoring a child could be a way to give back. Plan USA is a great place to sponsor a child.

One way we could give back is to sponsor any community members who are doing marathon fund raisers, like the Susan Komen 3 Day Walk for breast cancer or any number of events like this that happen over the summer. Since there are so many, there could be a new one each month, this way no one's cause has to be excluded. Community members who are local to each other could even start teams if they wanted. Then people could meet each other, if they were so inclined

I think this is a great idea.

I was also thinking along the same lines as Maria. We have a 12 hour relay for cancer up here yearly. If people need sponsors they could possibly do it in an Eden gives back fashion.

There are also those programs like the click for mamograms. You just have to click that button once a day to help.

I think it would be awesome to have a club! I am a member of a few different organizations that do volunteer work across the USA (e.g. Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, and PETA). It would be cool to have a place to put up opportunities to "give back" like a electronic bulletin board (a forum thread and for bigger stuff, a monthly meeting) even if it is something like JobThingy mentioned-clicking or signing petitions etc.

It's odd this was posted today. I was JUST sitting at my new job realizing the organization I work for would be an excellent candidate for the Holiday gift giving we did last year. I think this idea has a lot of potential. I would love to see it have a focus on AIDS awareness etc but would also like it not be limited to sexual issues.

I think this sounds like a great idea! Every year I participate in a female cancer awareness program where we bake cookies and cupcakes for local women's hospice centers along with making donations to fund cancer research. It's very rewarding. There's a lot of ways to give back to your community. Even if it seems small, it most likely means something to someone and every little bit helps.

I definitely like this one. My son has Asperger's Syndrome which is a high level autism. It's one of the reasons why we do some much with animals. He connects so much better with animals then people. Definitely a cause that's worth supporting. Many schools are suffering with so many cut backs that it's those who need more attention that are getting the worst treatment.

I personally really like the autism suggestion (but that is because I also have children with autism). All the suggestions are wonderful so far. This really is a good idea to try and get people more involved.

I would love to participate, but it depends on the reach. I couldn't sponsor a family for the Community Outreach program because I am in Canada...

Very soon I will be living in rural Mexico, with LOTS of opportunities to help people. In fact, I already have an idea in mind... But if I won't be able to participate based on my location, that puts a damper on things.

As far as gathering people to donate, we can just rally to have people donate directly - set up a way for people to make $ donations through Paypal or other donation-gathering websites.

We could also organize community initiatives - like you said, planting a tree - where people commit to going out and doing something good for their home community, the environment, etc. Maybe have a monthly meeting where we discuss 1 global issue that we can each individual take responsibility for acting on in our own lives and communities, and 1 local community issue that we can all help someone else out with, whatever their needs?

I just wanted to throw out a few ideas that I thought the Community Meeting discussed that were really good.

1.VieuxCarre came up with this idea:"reach out and give some help to those who are going through unplanned pregnancies and donate some to helping bring more awareness about using protection and safe sex" which turned into a possibly donating condoms, kindof like the "safe sex" programs running.

2.Cancer was also brought up. But interestingly it was brought up with including men in this. Which I think is a wonderful idea as the focus is usually at the women.

I have to go back and see if there are any more great ideas that were mentioned, but holy cow at the community meeting they really jump around in topics. I know I missed some great information

I came across this and thought maybe it would be an easy way to help start the creative juices flowing in ideas for how to help... It gives many search options and shows what is available, so ideas could easily be modified to fit needs. Just my thoughts. link
